COLLEGES

Antelope Valley College

Former women's volleyball team members Andrea Buckner, Valecha Fletcher, Leslie Lawmaster and Shannon Nash will coach the region's newest club volleyball team.

Tryouts for Club Nai'a, a team for girls' 15 and older, will be Nov. 10 at Antelope Valley High school from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. The staff asks each athlete to bring a parent or guardian, water, pen or pencil and a good attitude. Apparrel must include: T-shirt, shorts (no zippers or buttons), tennis shoes. For questions, call Andrea Buckner at (661) 574-4021. Team practices will be held at AVC during the season.

HIGH SCHOOLS

Antelope Valley

The Antelopes (4-3, 2-0) know they can't stop Quartz Hill workhorse Mychael Williams when they travel to Quartz Hill (2-5, 2-0) to play at 7 tonight. But they feel they will be OK as long as they hold him in check.

``We'll have kind of a bend-but-don't-break mentality,'' assistant coach Brandon Newcomb said. ``We need to keep him from reeling off a big one.''

- Matthew Kredell

Highland

The football team plays host to winless Littlerock tonight at 7 and should pick up a victory if its defense plays to par.

Littlerock has scored just 95 points in six games this season and faces a strong Highland defense that has allowed an average of 232.3 yards per game this year.

The Bulldogs will try to win on the ground, with the tailback duo of Jake Wright and Kris Theus, as the Lobos have showed vulnerability on run defense.

Lancaster

The football team's defensive woes were evident when the Eagles allowed a program-high 47 points in a recent loss to Quartz Hill, but last week's loss to Antelope Valley exemplified Lancaster's offensive struggles. The Eagles, who haven't scored more than two touchdowns in a game, did not get inside the 20 until a few minutes into the fourth quarter of the 38-6 defeat.

Lancaster tries to improve on both aspects of is game and go for its first Golden League victory of the season tonight when the Eagles play at Palmdale at 7 p.m.

Littlerock

Littlerock goes for its first football victory of the season - an opening win over Burroughs of Burbank was overturned by forfeit - at Golden League rival Highland at 7:30 tonight.

The Lobos (0-6, 0-2) can play the role of spoiler because a victory tonight knocks the Bulldogs (2-4, 0-2) out of playoff contention.

``We plan on playing hard and if we win we'll be very, very happy,'' coach Jim Bauer said.

- Gerry Gittelson

Palmdale

Receiver Javonte Holmes will see action at quarterback as usual starter Jacob McCravey is one of five players who will be benched for part of tonight's game against Lancaster (1-6, 0-2) for a prank on crosstown rival Highland.

Palmdale (5-2, 2-0) beat Lancaster 17-6 last season.

- Matthew Kredell

Paraclete

Former Paraclete girls' volleyball standout Stephanie Ramirez, a sophomore defensive specialist at Antelope Valley College, has played well for the Marauders.

She's one of four players to appear in all 46 games on the season. Despite standing just 5-foot-7, Ramirez is third on the team in kills with 60. And she's living up to her role as a defensive specialist to lead the Marauders in digs with 123.

Quartz Hill

The Rebels' run defense will be tested tonight in a Golden League football showdown against visiting rival Antelope Valley at 7:30. The Antelopes have several running options: quarterback Johnny Walker (449 yards, seven touchdowns), Brandon Narcisse (341 yards, four touchdowns) and Sean Wallace (135 yards).

Quartz Hill has its own running-back standout in Mychael Williams (857 yards, seven touchdowns), but A.V. has the potential to eat up the clock if it can make methodical drives with its offense.

The Rebels are off to a 2-0 start in Golden League play after an 0-5 nonleague effort. The last three games will be tough, beginning with tonight's game against the Antelopes and playoff hopefuls Palmdale and Highland looming.
