COLLEGES

College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  

Juan Granados tries to continue his solid comeback with the Cougars' cross country team when COC See chip on chip.  competes in the Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  Invitational today at noon.

Granados was the Cougars' No. 2 runner in 1999 but sat out last season. He is one of the bright spots on this year's team that finished last in the first Western State Conference meet. Granados placed 12th at the 10-team event last week with a time of 22:53, making him COC's only representative in the top 25.

The varsity basketball team conducts final tryouts in late November or early December, depending on how far the football team progresses through the playoffs, according to second-year coach Tom Kelly.

After-school practice begins Nov. 10 and the first preseason game is against visiting Quartz Hill on Nov. 28.

Saugus

Yasaman Sakhakorn, the standout freshman who had breezed through all competition, lost her first set of the season Tuesday to Burbank's ranked senior, Olga Yepremian. Sakhakorn had been looking forward to playing Yepremian, to whom she lost in tournament play during the summer. Sakhakorn will get another shot at Yepremian on Oct. 25 at Saugus.

Valencia

The varsity girls' volleyball team gets a break from the Foothill League race it is in contention to win, but there is no rest for the freshman team this weekend. It competes in the Saugus tournament today before returning to league play Tuesday against Burbank.

Today's all-day event begins at 8:30 a.m at Saugus High.
