The Antelope Valley Junior forward Chris Tyars has emerged as a boys' basketball standout. Tyars led the Antelopes in scoring in Thursday's 72-50 loss to Quartz Hill and was the team's leading rebounder in a 78-73 victory Jan. 18 over Lancaster. ``He's really stepped up,'' Antelope Valley coach Ed Campbell said. ``He draws some of the toughest (man-on-man) defensive assignments when we go to box-and-one and triangle-plus-two (defenses) and he does a really good job.'' - Gideon Rubin Highland The girls' soccer team will play host to Quartz Hill in a critical Golden League game Saturday at 5 p.m. Highland is seeking its first win over Quartz Hill since 1997, and a victory would give the Bulldogs (5-1) a half-game lead over the Rebels (5-0-1) atop the league standings.
