DAILY UPDATE.Byline: - Gerry Gittelson COLLEGES College of the Canyons Promising softball pitcher Tori Rocco, a former Foothill League MVP at Valencia High who transferred from Arkansas Tech, has left the softball team, partly because of a shoulder injury. It isn't clear if the right- hander plans to return. The Master's College Women's basketball standout Tiffany Webb has come back strong from a knee injury suffered last season. In four games, the 5-foot-10 senior from Beavercreek, Ohio, is leading the team in points (17.0) and minutes (31.8), and second on the team in steals (3.3). HIGH SCHOOLS Canyon After beginning the season by playing nine games in 13 days, the boys' basketball team finally gets a chance to catch its breath. The Cowboys (3-6), coming off a 47-45 victory Monday over Alemany of Mission Hills, play just one game - against visiting Lancaster on Monday - over a 14-day period. Hart Football quarterback Tyler Lyon's 3,116 passing yards is the ninth-best total since 1990 among non-seniors from the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys and surrounding areas. Saugus Goalkeeper Laurel Riggin is off to an impressive start for the girls' soccer team. She made several terrific saves during a 1-1 tie against Ventura on Tuesday. Her sturdy play in front of the net has helped Saugus to a 3-2-1 record - including an unbeaten streak of three games - heading into a 3:15 p.m. nonleague game today at Chaminade of West Hills. Valencia For the sixth year in a row, the softball team figures to have an excellent pitching combination instead of relying on one starter. Right- handers Courtney Baughman, a senior, and junior Jordan Taylor should split time this spring, and both throw hard. Baughman has committed to Hawaii, and Taylor was dominant on the junior varsity last year. ``They're both similar, and they both look very good. We should have quite a one-two punch,'' coach Donna Lee said. |
