DAILY UPDATE.HIGH SCHOOLS Antelope Valley After beginning Golden League play 0-3, it seemed the girls' basketball team's run of playoff appearances was over. The team that used to battle Palmdale annually for the league title was rebuilding without graduated standouts Shaquina Mosley and Sheena Crenshaw. But with four victories in six games, the Antelopes are tied for third with Littlerock and play Friday at Littlerock with a playoff spot on the line. - Matthew Kredell Highland The girls' basketball team effectively saw its playoff hopes dashed after a 56-47 loss to Littlerock on Tuesday. Highland fell to 9-16 overall and 3-6 in league. A team needs 11 victories to qualify for the playoffs and Highland has one game remaining. But that should not dampen what was a remarkable turnaround by the Bulldogs under first-year coach Ed Campbell. Last season, Highland had only five victories and went winless in league. - Ramona Shelburne Lancaster The girls' basketball team faces a must-win game Friday against Highland. Lancaster is 5-4 in league and needs a victory to stay in contention for second place. Lancaster and Antelope Valley are tied at 5-4, but A.V. has a more difficult game on Friday against Littlerock. Lancaster has lost its past two games, to A.V. and Palmdale, without forward Roxy Jackson, who injured her knee. But the Eagles already have clinched their first winning league in school history. - Ramona Shelburne Littlerock The girls' basketball team will have a showdown at home against Antelope Valley on Friday. The game will determine third place in the Golden League and a playoff berth. Littlerock (13-9, 4-5) kept its playoff hopes alive with a 56-47 victory over Highland on Tuesday. Tia Horner's return to health should give Littlerock a chance. - Matthew Kredell Palmdale The girls' soccer team defeated Lancaster 3-0 this week and needs a victory today for a chance to tie for second place in league. The Falcons (14-11-1, 6-3) moved into sole possession of third place with the victory over Lancaster. They play at Quartz Hill at 6 p.m. today. A victory over the Rebels and a Highland loss to Lancaster would put Palmdale in a tie with Highland (7-2 in league) for second. Quartz Hill's only defeat in league was a 3-1 loss to Palmdale in the teams' first meeting. - Lauren Gustus Paraclete After clinching the Olympic League title with a 1-0 victory over L.A. Baptist of North Hills on Tuesday, the boys' soccer team's priority in today's regular-season finale against Valley Christian of Cerritos is staying healthy. ``We don't know how many of the starters are going to play,'' coach Pat McIver said. ``We may give them a few minutes, but we're not sure how much we're going to give them. We have had our share of injuries this year, and we have to be healthy for the playoffs.'' - Gideon Rubin Quartz Hill With a 9-0 victory over Antelope Valley on Tuesday, the girls' soccer team (13-4-2, 8-1) clinched at least a share of the Golden League title. The Rebels' finish will be decided at 6 p.m. today. If the Rebels lose to Palmdale and Highland beats Lancaster, both teams will finish 8-2. Quartz Hill will be ready for the Falcons, in third place in the league standings, after it lost 3-1 in the teams' first meeting. - Lauren Gustus |
