COLLEGES

College of the Canyons

As expected, the football team finished No. 2 in California in the JC Athletic Bureau's final poll after losing to top-ranked Reedley in the Community College Championship on Dec. 14.

Quarterback Kyle Bauer, who has committed to Weber State, was named first-team All-America and state Offensive Player of the Year. He was among four Cougars named to the Region III All-State team. Running back J.J. Arrington, receiver Tyrell Smith and lineman Chris Haynes were the others.

The Master's College

The men's basketball team (11-2, 1-1 Golden State Athletic Conference) has lost two of its past four games - including a 90-86 loss at Azusa Pacific on Saturday - heading into tonight's 7:30 game at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa.

Keron Wilkerson, recovering from a one-game absence because of the flu, scored 25 points and had nine rebounds against Azusa Pacific. He's averaging 20.5 points per game.

HIGH SCHOOLS

Canyon

Junior quarterback Nate Longshore, a 6-foot-4, 200-pounder who probably will be among the Southland's top college recruits next season, probably won't participate in any offseason scouting combines.

``I really don't believe in those things. They're not necessary,'' Canyon coach Harry Welch said. ``Believe me, by next season every college coach is going to know who Nate Longshore is.''

Hart

Several football players were named to the annual Cal Hi Sports all-state team. Junior quarterback Sean Norton and sophomore receiver/defensive back Ryan Wolfe were first-team underclass selections, and junior receiver Kevin Ciccone and junior lineman Kevin Bell received honorable mention on the underclass team.

Saugus

Football standout Kevin Estes said he was misunderstood when quoted recently in the Daily News as saying he hasn't achieved an NCAA Division I qualifying score on the SAT. Estes, who set a Saugus season record with 79 receptions this past season, said he has indeed qualified but plans to retake the exam to get a higher score.

Valencia

The football team is searching for opponents for Week 2 and Week 5 next football season, according to head coach Brian Stiman.
