DAILY UPDATE.Byline: - Gerry Gittelson COLLEGES College of the Canyons Quarterback Jason Winn, who missed last week's game because of a concussion suffered the previous week, isn't expected to play at L.A. Southwest at 1 p.m. today. Winn, who went to Granada Hills High and Texas Tech before transferring to College of the Canyons, began throwing this week and should be back next game. The Master's College The men's basketball team (17-13 in 2001) began practicing this week, and the Mustangs are hoping transfers Keron Wilkerson (Hawaii), Brian McCormack (Lamar) and Caleb Adcock (Georgia) can make a difference. Wilkerson is a 6-foot-5 junior, McCormack a 6-9 sophomore and Adcock a 6-7 freshman. The season opener is Nov. 15 against visiting Holy Names of Oakland. HIGH SCHOOLS Canyon The boys' basketball team opens the season with its annual alumni game Nov. 28 at Canyon. Tipoff is 7 p.m. The preseason begins with the Saugus Shootout tournament Dec. 3-7. Hart Head coach Mike Herrington plans to give a strong push for Cody Kase to receive a Division I football scholarship. ``Last year, Cody was real solid at linebacker but didn't really have a great highlight tape,'' Herrington said. ``This year, he's doing a lot more, especially on offense, and I'm going to put a good tape together and get on the phone and make some calls.'' Kase is Hart's leading receiver and a key hitter at linebacker. A sure inclusion on his highlight tape will be his 68-yard touchdown reception with no time remaining to give Hart a 21-21 tie against Los Alamitos in the season opener. Saugus Receiver Kevin Estes, who had 55 catches as a junior last season, could approach 100 if he keeps pace this year. Estes, who had a school-record 14 catches in the first game of the season, entered the week with a region-best 28 receptions for 361 yards and five touchdowns. Valencia Offensive lineman Alex Gottlieb has a modest career goal: He wants to play in the NFL. Gottlieb, a 6-foot-5, 280-pounder who has been offered a scholarship to Washington State, could be on his way. If the NFL doesn't work out, he has a backup plan: own his own business. |
