Saugus

The boys' basketball team, whose outside shooting and fast-paced offense helped it to a second-place finish in the Foothill League, travels to Perris for its first-round playoff game on Friday.

Perris is led by Jason Zimmer, a 6-foot-9 forward who has been listed with Dominguez's Tyson Chandler, Burroughs Ridgecrest's Rory O'Neill and others as one of Southern California's top big men this season.

The Centurions have struggled to stop some taller teams, particularly O'Neill and Burroughs Ridgecrest in the Saugus Shoot-Out Tournament. Bradford Sayer (6-4) and Justin Muszalski (6-3) are the best candidates to try and stop Zimmer on Friday.

Boys' basketball coach Gary Spindt is stepping down after this season. Assistant coach Robert Collins, who served as interim head coach for part of this season, is expected to take over as head coach for 2001-02.

The desire to spend more time with family is cited as the reason for Spindt's departure. He has been caring for his ill wife.

Spindt has at least one more game left with the Vikings, though. Valencia hosts Loyola in the first round of playoffs on Friday.
