COLLEGES

Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.

Winning sometimes has a way of making things easier. Such is the case for the softball team, which beat host Ventura 4-0 on Monday to snap a three-game losing streak.

Highland

The varsity boys' volleyball team began practice this week with hopes it can win a fourth consecutive Golden League title.

Highland, which was knocked out in the second round of the Southern Section Division I playoffs last season by Valencia, have six players returning. Among them is senior setter Bryan Berman, the league's MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. Lancaster

A third-place finish in the Golden League was good enough to earn the girls' soccer team a Division I playoff berth, but it left the Eagles with a tough task. Lancaster must play a wild-card game today at Diamond Bar, the second-place team from the Sierra League. A victory would advance the Eagles to a first-round matchup Saturday at Mt. Littlerock

Former Lobos football standout John Ford, who rushed for nearly 2,000 yards for Foothill High in Henderson, Nev., this past season, committed to UNLV UNLV University of Nevada, Las Vegas  early last fall but didn't sign a scholarship on letter-ontent day last Wednesday.

According to a source, Ford hasn't met NCAA NCAA

Palmdale

The girls' soccer team (14-5-5) finished second in the Golden League, but that wasn't enough to avoid having to play a wild-card game. Palmdale hosts Glendale (11-9-1), the third-place team from the Pacific League, today for a chance to play in the first round.

Paraclete

The girls' soccer team is back in the Southern Section Division V playoffs and hoping for a better draw. Last year, the Alpha League champions made it to the second round in Division IV but lost to hard-charging Louisville of Woodland Hills, which eventually won the co-championship.

Paraclete finished second in the Alpha League this season but dropped down to Division V and will host a wild-card match today against Mammoth, which finished third in the High Desert League.

A victory means the Spirits will play Saturday at Alverno, the Horizon League champion.

Quartz Hill

The boys' soccer team's first step toward a possible Southern Section Division I championship begins Friday against visiting Alhambra.

Perhaps the Rebels' fuel will be their seeding. The Daily News' No. 1- ranked team also is atop the Top 10 poll in Division I. But Alta Loma, not the Rebels, earned the top seed. Alta Loma also is unbeaten.

Quartz Hill's road toward a possible championship match with Alta Loma includes potential second-round opponent Oxnard and Long Beach Millikan in the semifinals.
