The outstanding prep career of wrestler Steve Frehn came to an end Saturday at the Southern Section Masters Meet at Fountain Valley High. Two weeks ago, Frehn overcame severe flu symptoms to win Highland's first Southern Section Central Division championship (145 pounds) in seven years. But on Saturday, while still battling flu, Frehn was eliminated in a qualifying match.

Frehn is a three-time Golden League champion and national science award winner. Frehn is being pursued by several top academic institutions, including Stanford and Columbia.

The softball team opens its season Saturday at 9 a.m. against Thousand Oaks in the first round of the Hart Tournament.

Senior guard Sandy Perry was named the Golden League girls' basketball MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. Officially introduced as the TMS320C80, it combines RISC technology with the functionality of four DSPs on one chip. .

Perry led a Palmdale team hit hard by graduation to a share of its third consecutive league title.

Palmdale lost to Etiwanda 68-47 in the second round of the Southern Section Div. I-AA playoffs on Thursday.

Paraclete has a scrimmage against host Quartz Hill on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. Paraclete then plays host to Quartz Hill in its season opener March 8 at 3:15 p.m.

The perennial area power boys' tennis team figures to be in a strong position to win its 15th consecutive Golden League title.

Junior Alex Majd, the league's defending individual champion, and junior Chad Maynard are key returners for Quartz Hill.
