Erik Timson will compete at the Masters Meet wrestling championships after a dominant performance in the 147-pound division's fifth-place match at the Southern Section Central Division individual championships Saturday at Brea Olinda High.

Timson routed Hesperia's Sylvester Gonzalez 16-1 to finish fifth and secure his spot in the state qualifying tournament Friday and Saturday at Fountain Valley Fountain Valley, city (1990 pop. 53,691), Orange co., S Calif.; inc. 1957. Chiefly residential, Fountain Valley also has diverse manufactures, including apparel, computer equipment, semiconductors, and medical equipment. A U.S. navy helicopter facility is there.  High.

Timson dropped into the consolation bracket Saturday after losing 3-2 to Highland's Steve Frehn 3-2 in the semifinals. Frehn won the title.

Highland

The girls' soccer team will play host today to Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  in the second round of the Southern Section Div. II playoffs, and coach Juan Paolo said his team will play, rain or shine, unless the field is deemed unplayable by the referees.

Highland (22-2-1) beat Pasadena 4-3 in the first round, the first playoff victory in school history. Only one Southern Section school - Mayfair of Lakewood, with 23 - has more victories than the Bulldogs.

Lancaster

The boys' basketball team aims for another upset at 7:30 tonight when it plays host to 12th-seeded Diamond Bar in the second round of the Southern Section Div. I-AA playoffs.

Lancaster, a wild-card team, surprised sixth-seeded Redlands 67-63 Friday night.

Diamond Bar is led by senior guard Collin Robinson, who has made 80 3-pointers this season and is averaging 25.4 points per game.

Littlerock

Johnny Garso, one of the region's most improved wrestlers, finished third at Saturday's Southern Section Central Division individual championships at Brea Olinda High.

Garso defeated Granite Hills of Apple Valley's Josh Maunu in the third- place match 8-2.

``It means a lot to me,'' Garso said. ``The last few years I struggled, and it got pretty frustrating, but coach (Stuart) Young worked with me on visualizing my moves, and that's really helped me this year.''

Palmdale

Sam Cooksey qualified for this week's Masters Meet wrestling championships (Friday and Saturday at Fountain Valley High), fighting back into medal contention after he was upset by Granite Hills of Apple Valley's Josh White in the championship quarterfinals of the Southern Section Central Division individual wrestling championships Friday at Brea Olinda High.

Cooksey, a No. 2 seed, went 3-1 Saturday in the 137-pound division, pinning Sultana of Hesperia's Mike Lee in 2 minutes, 53 seconds to win the fifth-place match and qualify for the Masters Meet.

``It was really disappointing to lose (in the quarterfinals),'' Cooksey said, ``so to be able to come back and go to Masters feels really good.''
