DAILY UPDATE.Byline: - Gerry Gittelson COLLEGES College of the Canyons The softball team, led by returning slugger Nicole Delfino, is scheduled to scrimmage UCLA at Easton Stadium in Westwood on Friday at 1 p.m. The game reunites former Valencia High outfielder Danyale Peterson with her former high school teammates, UCLA signees Jaisa Creps and Ashley Herrera. Creps' father, Jay, helped arrange the event. Admission is free, but attendees are advised to bring their own chairs because the stadium's bleachers are under renovation. Parking is available at lot No. 11 after obtaining passes at the main gate. The Master's College The men's basketball team figures to work on its shooting this week after connecting on just 39.1 percent of its shots - including 6 of 31 3-pointers - in a 73-64 loss Tuesday at Westmont in Santa Barbara. The Master's (11-5, 2-3 Golden State Athletic Conference) has lost three of its past four heading into Saturday's 7:30 p.m. game against Biola at Bross Gym. HIGH SCHOOLS Canyon Quarterback Nate Longshore was named second-team all-state by Cal-Hi Sports. But perhaps a few of his teammates were snubbed. Receiver Sean Coen, whose 108 receptions this past season were among the most in state history, didn't even earn honorable mention. Neither did linebacker Andrew Schantz, who has committed to San Diego State and was at one point ranked the No. 2 linebacker in California by Student Sports. Hart Postseason honors continue to pour in for quarterback Sean Norton. He has been named first-team all-state by Cal-Hi Sports, an especially significant honor because Norton is the only quarterback on the list. Norton, who has committed to Fresno State after leading Hart to the Southern Section Div. II championship this past December, also was named MVP of the Foothill League for the second consecutive season, as well as co-MVP of the team (along with receiver/defensive back Kevin Ciccone) at the team awards banquet last weekend. Ciccone and offensive lineman Kevin Bell were named third-team all-state by Cal-Hi Sports. Among those receiving honorable mention were offensive linemen Joe Bernardi and Dusty Green. Saugus Pitching depth should be the biggest strength for the baseball team this spring, when All-Foothill League left-handers Jason Pfau and Thomas Milone return along with right-handers Travis Babin and Scott Wischnack. ``We're very happy with the development of all of them,'' coach Casey Burrill said. Babin pitched a six-inning shutout with eight strikeouts and three hits allowed in the team's last winter-league scrimmage in Brea on Dec. 29. The team is on a six-week break before the first day of practice Feb. 16. Valencia The boys' basketball team is hoping starting forward Vince Dennington and reserve forward Aaron Smith return to full strength shortly; both are playing despite injuries. Dennington has a bruised toe and Smith has a sprained ankle. |
