According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. Men's basketball players David Hungerford and Steven Brown have committed to four-year universities. Hungerford is going to San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden State, and Brown is headed to Missouri-St. Louis. The Master's College History The Master's College was founded as Los Angeles Baptist Theological Seminary on May 25, 1927 to meet the need for a fundamental Baptist school on the West Coast. Junior center fielder Jerry Owens Jerry Lee Owens (born on February 16, 1981 in Hollywood, California) is a Major League Baseball outfielder currently with the Chicago White Sox. He played most of the 2006 season with the AAA Charlotte Knights (Chicago White Sox affiliation) of the International League, but was won Golden State Athletic Conference The Golden State Athletic Conference is a college athletics conference in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The conference commissioner is Dr. Cliff Hamlow of Azusa Pacific University. Conference leadership is shared among the member institutions. Player of the Year honors, senior Chad Spencer was voted pitcher of the year and Monte Brooks was named coach of the year as The Master's College swept the major conference awards announced last week. Owens is a former football standout at Hart who also played football at UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University) UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX before transferring to The Master's. Spencer played baseball at Quartz Hill High and Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties. . HIGH SCHOOLS Canyon The boys' and girls' track teams made impressive showings at the Foothill League finals at Birmingham High in Lake Balboa on Friday. Alysia Johnson, a junior who has finished seventh in the state the past two seasons, won the girls' 800 and also anchored Canyon's winning 400 and 1,600 relay teams. Troy Werner won the boys' 3,200, Chris Blanks won the boys' long jump and Brenda Stevens won the girls' 3,200. In all, 14 team members advanced to the Southern Section Div. II prelims Friday at Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. SAC; pronounced as the word "sack") is a community college located in the Los Angeles suburb of Walnut, California, next to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona which is just over a hill. Mt. in Walnut. Hart Two high-profile baseball alumni who now are coaching elsewhere - Saugus baseball coach Casey Burrill ('87) and St. Francis of La Canada football coach Jim Bonds ('89) - attended Hart's 11-9 nonleague loss to visiting Arlington of Riverside on Saturday afternoon. The loss evened Hart's record at 12-12 (9-4 in Foothill League) with two games against Saugus remaining. Hart travels to Saugus at 3:15 p.m. today then finishes by hosting the Centurions at 3:15 p.m. Thursday. Hart, which must win at least one of the games to clinch second place, hasn't finished below .500 in the regular season since 1979. Saugus The baseball team remains in third place in the Foothill League but enters the final week of the season as one of the region's hottest teams. The Centurions, 14-7 (7-5-1 in league) after defeating Canyon 11-2 Friday, have won 10 of their past 12 entering a two-game series against Hart today and Friday. Valencia The softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies' team, 24-3 after winning its 15th in a row with a 6-2 victory over visiting Burroughs of Burbank on Thursday, can set a school record for victories in a season by winning one its final two regular-season games this week. Valencia, which has won 25 games in each of the past two seasons, plays at Saugus at 3:15 p.m. today, then finishes at Canyon at 3:15 p.m. Thursday. The Vikings, who have clinched a share of their third consecutive Foothill League championship, are ranked No. 1 by the Daily News and No. 3 in Division I by the Southern Section. |
