COLLEGES

College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  

Football player Cedric Thompson finished the regular season as the Western State Conference's leading punt returner Punt returner (PR) is a position on special teams in American football. Description
The role of a punt returner is to catch the ball after it is punted and to give his team good field position (or a touchdown if possible) by returning it.
. His 502 yards on punt returns (13.9 yards per return) were 180 more than anyone else in the conference. He also finished second in kickoff returns with 572 yards and a conference-best 31.8 yards per return.

The sophomore receiver ranked second in all-purpose yards with 1,252 while helping the Cougars (9-1) to the WSC WSC Winter Symposium on Chemometrics

Nathan Burr and Lucas Bongarra scored the goals and goalkeeper Eric Pattison recorded his third shutout in as many tournament matches to lift the Mustangs past Mid-Continent (Ky.) in the final.

The Mustangs' women also advanced to the NCCAA NCCAA National Christian College Athletic Association

 final but lost 1-0 to Gardner-Webb (N.C.) Monday in Florida.

Canyon Canyon

graduate Lauren Fleshman finished third in the NCAA NCAA
abbr.
National Collegiate Athletic Association
 cross country championships on Saturday and led the Cardinal women to a third-place finish in the team competition.

A junior, Fleshman finished in 20 minutes, 35 seconds, behind only Tara Chaplin of Arizona (20:24) and Renee Metivier of Georgia Tech (20:31).

Fleshman also improved on last year's 11th-place finish at the NCAA meet.

Hart

Hart tips off the basketball season at home tonight with three games. The boys' JV plays the faculty at 5:30, the girls' varsity plays the women's alumni at 6:30 and the boys' varsity plays the men's alumni at about 7:45.

Saugus

Yasaman Sakhakorn didn't see any tennis players like this in Santa Clarita. The Saugus freshman, who went 53-1 in her first year of high school tennis and upset defending champion Olga Yepremian of Burbank to win the Foothill League title, saw what tougher competition is out there Saturday in the Southern Section Individuals.

Sakhakorn lost 6-3, 6-2 in the second round to Lesley Damion of Corona del Mar, the top girls' tennis team in the state.

Valencia

The boys' basketball team tipped off its season Tuesday with a scrimmage against Alemany in addition to playing host to its annual alumni game. Valencia's first official game is Monday, when the Vikings begin play in the Pacific Shores tournament.
