COLLEGES

College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  

The women's volleyball team looks to parlay Friday's season-opening four-game victory over Cerritos in the home opener this Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Cougars (1-0), led by setter Natalie Coe from Quartz Hill High, take on Irvine Valley Irvine Valley may refer to:

The Master's College History
The Master's College was founded as Los Angeles Baptist Theological Seminary on May 25, 1927 to meet the need for a fundamental Baptist school on the West Coast.
 

After a difficult, injury-filled 2002 season, the men's and women's cross country teams appear headed in the right direction.

In Saturday's opening meet at the Whittier Invitational, the women finished fourth among eight teams, and the men finished fourth among nine teams.

Amy Rice, a junior, led the women by finishing 10th overall among 76 runners. Freshman Nadine Fischetti was 20th, freshman Laura Hamilton was 25th and senior Amie Jackson was 28th.

Canyon

As expected, Canyon's cross country teams dominated at the Colton Invitational. Senior Alysia Johnson finished first and Leanne Riggin was second for the girls.

Hart

The girls' tennis team, which finished best among local teams at the Valencia tournament Saturday, plays three consecutive matches on the road - beginning at 3:15 p.m. today at Buena in Ventura - before returning home Sept. 25 before the last nonleague matchup of the season prior to Foothill League competition.

Hart, which opened the season with a loss at Westlake on Friday, finished third behind Granada Hills and Northwood of Irvine at the Valencia fest. Doubles partners Amy Davidson Amy Davidson (born September 15, 1979 in Phoenix, Arizona) is an American television actress who is best known for her role as Kerry Michelle Hennessy in 8 Simple Rules.  and Brittany Martin finished third Saturday, Iren Chen finished sixth in singles after losing in the consolation final.

Saugus

The baseball team held tryouts last week, and sophomores Ryan Ericson and Julian Cruz have made the varsity. Meanwhile, varsity head coach Casey Burrill said he's excited about the freshman class, with pitchers Spencer Smith and Steven Maynard, outfielder Brandon Salazar and shortstop Brandon Young.
