Highland

The varsity boys' basketball team faces its final nonleague game today when the Bulldogs travel to Canyon Springs for a 6 p.m. tipoff.

Highland's Mike Stevenson and Tre Peters had strong games in last week's Hart tournament. The Bulldogs begin league play Tuesday against Antelope Valley.

There will be little rest for the varsity after the tournament finishes Saturday. The Eagles start Golden League play Tuesday against Quartz Hill and then travel to play Antelope Valley Jan. 11.

Both the varsity boys' and girls' soccer teams are in the middle of a nice gameless stretch. But the Lobos should get all the rest they can with Golden League games fast approaching.

The girls, who last played Wednesday against Silverado, don't take the field again until Tuesday, when they play host to Palmdale. But the games come quickly after that. Littlerock then plays Quartz Hill on Thursday, Highland on Jan. 15 and Antelope Valley on Jan. 17.

The boys haven't played since Dec. 20. The Lobos travel to Palmdale this Wednesday, play host to Quartz Hill on Friday, go to Highland Jan. 16 and are at home against Antelope Valley Jan. 18.

Judy Collier, a 2001 graduate, is excelling as a women's basketball player in her freshman year at Antelope Valley College. Collier,a guard/forward, is third on the team with 7 points per game. She is the Marauders' best 3-point shooter with 10 made. AVC is 7-10 overall, 1-0 in the Foothill Conference, and has won four of its past six games.

Paraclete

Tonight's basketball doubleheader at Antelope Valley College should be a good matchup between neighboring schools Paraclete and Desert Christian. Both boys' and girls' teams have been successful in recent seasons.

The Spirits' girls, led by guard Dani Gaeta, meet the Eagles in game one at 6:30 p.m. The boys' game follows at approximately at 8 p.m., when the Spirits will rely on their scoring tandem of Drew Gill and Matt Marquez.

This should be a good matchup for both Spirits' teams entering Alpha League play.

Quartz Hill

It's hard to believe the boys' soccer team is better than the one that rolled through the Golden League and nearly reached the Southern Section Division I semifinal.

But the Rebels are 12-0 after two wins Wednesday at the Royal tournament and they might not be challenged in 10 Golden League matches after going 9-1 last season. Those Rebels finished 24-3-1 before their playoff loss to Mater Dei Mater Dei is Latin for "Mother of God", referring to the Virgin Mary. The term has been used to name various institutions, often Catholic, including:
