Highland

Two local girls' basketball teams with playoff aspirations meet tonight when Highland hosts Canyon in a nonleague game at 7.

Canyon should have a size advantage, as the Cowboys are led by 6-foot forward Ashley Palmer, while the Bulldogs starting forwards are 5-7 and 5-6.

But those forwards, Tionna Cunningham and Amy Burleson, are versatile players who will make the Cowboys play strong defense.

Paraclete

If their third postseason meeting in as many seasons is anything like the 2000 and 1999 games, then tonight's Southern Section Division XII championship game between Paraclete and Montclair Prep figures to be decided deep into the fourth quarter.

The Spirits, behind quarterback Craig Herrera's two touchdown passes, beat the Mounties 14-12 on the same Valley College field hosting tonight's 7:30 title game.

Two years ago, Paraclete and Montlcair Prep played a classic Division XII quarterfinal. Sophomore Joe Martin, now the Spirits' defensive and emotional leader, preserved a 35-34 victory, also at Valley College, with a blocked extra point in the fourth quarter.

Running back Mychael Williams was without question the Rebels' MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. Officially introduced as the TMS320C80, it combines RISC technology with the functionality of four DSPs on one chip. . The Golden League's coaches couldn't agree more, naming the senior back of the year after Williams rushed for 1,348 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The Rebels placed offensive lineman Josh Mealey, tight end B.A. Harrell and linebacker Matt Jacobs on the All-Golden League team. Harrell is just a junior and should be on the league's top returnees next year.

Offensive lineman John Arslanian, linebacker Shane Gates and defensive lineman Alex Albaum were second-team selections.
