MACKIE has urged fellow Fife flyer Ryan Oswald to take the slow route to success in sprinting.

A decade ago Pitreavie Athletics Club could lay claim to one of the fastest young sprinters in the world in Mackie. Now Scottish Under-17 100m champ Oswald is putting the Dunfermline club back on the map.

At just 15, he will start the coming season as the quickest Brit in his age group over 100m. It all points to a rosy future but Mackie knows more than most how fate can derail de·rail

 even the best young talent.

He was a world junior medallist in 1994 and two years later an Olympic semi-finalist. But injuries then plagued his efforts and he is now looking to re-establish himself at 400m.

Mackie said: 'I trained with Ryan up until last year and there is no doubt he has great potential. But he must take his time, be patient and look to climb carefully and steadily.'

Oswald has already taken great strides just two years after following his mother Linda into track and field. As a junior sprinter Linda raced against another Pitreavie star Linsey Macdonald, who won a relay medal at the age of 16 in the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. That same year Allan Wells Allan Wipper Wells (born May 3, 1952) is a former Scottish athlete who became Olympic Champion in the 100 m at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. Biography

Oswald would love even to come close to matching the achievement of Wells but knows that the examples of Macdonald, who struggled to live up to her early promise, and Mackie offer valuable lessons on how fortunes can change in sport.
