for Daily News staff members because the competition is among the state's biggest newspapers and the Daily News is the smallest paper in the category,'' said David J. Butler, editor of the Daily News and executive vice president/news for the Los Angeles Newspaper Group The Los Angeles Newspaper Group is an umbrella group of local daily newspapers published in the greater Los Angeles area by MediaNews Group. The news coverage of the newspapers are mainly local stories. .

``While the state's largest newspaper, the L.A. Times, always dominates the competition, it is rewarding to see that a newspaper one-fifth the size of the Times surpasses that newspaper and many others with superior coverage in such important categories to readers as local column writing and overall sports coverage,'' Butler said.

``With regard to Dennis McCarthy, he's won most every award, including this one previously, and deservedly so. I trust his regular readers will get a laugh out of the fact that on the day this award was announced, Dennis was on vacation so no column appears,'' Butler said.

In the area of sports, the Daily News' sports section has repeatedly received acclaim for excellence in recent years, with it being named among the top 10 in the country for the last two years.

``The sports award is a team award, bringing recognition to all of the talented sports journalists who produce the Daily News' section every day,'' Butler said.

Other Los Angeles Newspaper Group newspapers to receive awards Saturday from the CNPA included:

In the 75,001- to 200,000-circulation category, the Long Beach Press- Telegram took second place for arts and entertainment writing as well as second place for spot news photography; the San Bernardino Sun won first place for column writing;, and the San Gabriel Valley The San Gabriel Valley is one of the principal valleys of southern California. It lies to the east of the city of Los Angeles, to the north of the Puente Hills, to the south of the San Gabriel Mountains, and to the west of the Inland Empire.  Tribune in West Covina took first and second place for spot news photography.

In the 10,001-25,000 circulation category, the Whittier Daily News took first place for best front page and second place for best feature photo.

The CNPA handed out more than 390 awards to daily and weekly newspapers at a luncheon Saturday in San Diego during its annual convention. There were some 3,375 total contest submissions. The entries were judged by a panel of nine news executives from outside California.
