DAILY NEWS WINS AWARD FOR 1995 EDUCATION STORIES.

Byline: Daily News

The Daily News has won a top award for education coverage in the California Teachers Association's annual John Swett Awards competition. The newspaper was honored for the best continuous coverage of education during 1995 by a paper with more than 100,000 circulation.

The stories were written primarily by Daily News education writer Kimberly Kindy, who a year ago won two Swett Awards for individual news and feature stories about education.

The Daily News coverage in 1995 focused on ``not just the bureaucracy, but the human side'' of education, said Catherine Carey, a spokeswoman for United Teachers-Los Angeles and one of those who nominated the paper for the award.

``The (Daily News) coverage shows the whole spectrum of what goes on in the Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population.  on a daily basis, as well as larger issues like the breakup proposal and LEARN reforms,'' Carey said.
