DAILY NEWS VICTORY SPRING CLASSIC: SAUGUS' OPTIONS OPEN.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

Saugus High softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  coach Rich Perez doesn't know who he'll send to the mound Saturday when his team faces Newbury Park in the Gold Bracket semifinal of the Daily News Victory Spring Classic at 11 a.m.

Right-handers Megan Ivey, a junior, and Kyla Sullivan, a freshman, both have been effective. In pool-play competition Saturday, Ivey beat Calabasas 8-3 and Sullivan defeated Taft of Woodland Hills 12-1.

Perez, a first-year coach, said he'll decide on game day.

``It's up in the air who will go on Saturday. I just don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

yet,'' he said. ``We'll wait until game time, just like we always do, and I'll just go with a hunch hunch

Meanwhile, junior catcher Jaclyn Holden is emerging as one of the region's top power hitters. She hit a home run in each of two games Saturday, giving her three in the last three games and four for the season. She also tripled twice, doubled and stole four bases.

That's one reason Saugus (7-5) has won four in a row, recovering nicely from a 1-4 start that left doubt about how Centurions will stack up with Foothill League favorites Hart and Valencia.

``If we play our game, I think we have a good chance against anybody,'' Perez said. ``Jaclyn Holden is very hot and always hits the ball hard. But our game is really just to put the ball in play and run.''

Newbury Park also has two excellent right-handers, Katie Stokx and Chrissy Zappia. Stokx beat La Canada 6-0 and Zappia shut out Kennedy of Granada Hills 10-0 last Saturday.

--Solid performance: Faith Baptist of Canoga Park, a Division VI team that had won just 2 of 7 games entering the tournament, certainly didn't embarrass embarrass /em·bar·rass/ (em-bar´as) to impede the function of; to obstruct.

 itself.

A shaky start led to an 8-3 loss to Sylmar in the first round of pool play, but the Contenders rebounded to beat Chatsworth 12-5, pounding out 20 hits against respected left-hander Cassie Shires.

--Given the thumb: Verdugo Hills of Tujunga assistant Marcos Medina was thrown out of the game after arguing a call by umpire Robert Bader in a second-round matchup against Calabasas.

``He used (profanity Irreverence towards sacred things; particularly, an irreverent or blasphemous use of the name of God. Vulgar, irreverent, or coarse language.

Medina said he got ``caught up in the heat of battle.''

Meanwhile, his team rallied for a 9-8 victory, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Verdugo Hills (10-2-1) plays La Canada (7-1) in the Silver Bracket semifinal at 11 a.m.

Verdugo Hills and La Canada are only about 10 minutes apart, but Verdugo Hills head coach Darren Fitzgerald Darren Fitzgerald (born December 16, 1977 in Belfast, Northern Ireland) is a Northern Irish football player who plays as a forward. He currently plays for Ballymena United in the Irish League. Honours
