DAILY NEWS STAFFERS WIN L.A. PRESS CLUB HONORS.

Byline: Daily News

Los Angeles Daily News The Daily News of Los Angeles, also known as the Los Angeles Daily News, is the second largest circulating daily newspaper of Los Angeles, California. It is published by the Los Angeles Newspaper Group, which owns eight other Southern California newspapers  Executive News Editor Brian Harr and cartoonist Patrick O'Connor Patrick J. O'Connor is a long-serving alderman in Chicago's City Council. O'Connor represents the 40th Ward on the North Side. Like the majority of the members of the City Council, he is a member of the Democratic Party.  won first-place prizes at the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Press Club's 48th Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Journalism Awards banquet Saturday night.

Harr's entry in the news design category was praised by the judges for ``a great job'' of combining ``emotion with simple, effective design'' to draw a reader into the story.

``By far, the L.A. Daily News showed greater care in how this portrayal played out in its pages,'' the judges said. ``The first photo, played full-page, showed a close-up of a frail Pope John Paul Pope John Paul is the name of two Popes of the Roman Catholic Church:
  • Pope John Paul I (1978), who named himself in honor of his predecessors, Pope John XXIII and Pope Paul VI. Reigned for only 34 calendar days
  • Pope John Paul II (1978–2005), the only Polish Pope.
.

``But it was how the section ended, with a full-page photo titled `Farewell,' that clinched the effect. That photo showed the pontiff from a distance, seated alone with his face in his hands. Very touching.''

O'Connor was honored for his cartoon titled ``Undocumented Workers.''

Daily News graphic artist Jon Gerung, columnist Mariel Garza and Assistant News Editor Tom Gapen won second places, and honorable mentions were received by photographer David Crane David Crane may refer to:

  • David Crane (talent agent), job-finder, talent coach for TV news talent.
  • David Crane (programmer), video game designer, programmer and co-founder of Activision.
and the Daily News editorial page staff.

Gerung's award was for his online tribute to actor James Dean Noun 1. James Dean - United States film actor whose moody rebellious roles made him a cult figure (1931-1955)

in honor of the 50th anniversary of his death. Garza's award was for her column headlined ``Blake trial feeling like a B-movie.''

Gapen's second-place award in the news design category was for the front page of the Daily News that carried all 2,000 names of U.S. military personnel who died in Iraq.

``This is an incredibly powerful front page, printed on the day U.S. military deaths in Iraq reached 2,000,'' the judges said.

``The simplicity of the design with the names of American dead over a gray tone `2,000,' coupled with a single dog tag dog tag

Daily News Editor Ron Kaye praised the achievements of the prize winners and the hard work of the entire staff that goes into the newspaper every day.

``It's great to see Patrick, Brian and everyone else get some of the recognition they deserve,'' Kaye said. ``The Daily News staff is the most dedicated I've ever worked with and they give everything they've got to produce a newspaper that respects and serves the whole community.''
