DAILY NEWS REPORTER WINS CROLY AWARD.Byline: - Daily News Daily News health writer Mariko Thompson has won the top writing prize from the General Federation of Women's Clubs women's clubs, groups that offer social, recreational, and cultural activities for adult females. Particularly strong in the United States, they became an important part of American town and village life in the latter part of the 19th cent. One of the earliest clubs was Sorosis, organized (1868) in New York City. In 1890 a convention called in New York by Sorosis resulted in the General Federation of Women's Clubs.. Thompson was awarded the Washingon, D.C.-based organization's annual Jane Cunningham Croly award for excellence for three stories she wrote last year on heart disease and breast cancer. The award ``honors the print journalist whose writing best captures the courage, vision and spirit of (19th century writer) Jane Cunningham Croly, who devoted her life to helping women improve their lives and expand their rights,'' contest organizers said.
