The name might sound like a particularly indigestible in·di·gest·i·ble adj. Difficult or impossible to digest: an indigestible meal. in appetizer, but it's actually a child-care program started by Judy Brandlin close to 14 years ago. The name comes from a fairy tale A Fairy Tale (AKA A Magic Tale) - Fantastic ballet in 1 Act, with choreography by Marius Petipa, and music by (?) Richter. The townspeople then add celery, carrots and other ingredients, and soon enough soup is made to feed everyone in the village. Stone Soup took on the name because, with the help of school districts, community contributions and low fees to parents, varied child-care programs were able to operate in communities where none were feasible before. The programs, held before and after school and during the summer, focus on the arts - including dance, theater and brush painting. HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED?: Before Brandlin started Stone Soup, she was a volunteer for the United Way. She co-chaired a child-care committee, and while there, saw a video about high school dropouts. From that video, she learned that ``the kids already have formed in their minds by the third grade whether or not they're going to succeed. It made me realize so many do not have a positive experience in school,'' she says. ``Child care has been on the lips of every politician,'' she adds, ``but they adopt a Band-Aid approach. Latchkey kids certainly should be treated better; we could prevent a lot of the failures.'' WHY DO YOU VOLUNTEER?: ``We all want to give back if we can.'' MOST DIFFICULT DAILY TASK: `'The administrative part of my job is not that exciting. I'd much rather be out with the children, but sometimes I'm office-bound - signing checks, doing reports, that kind of thing.''
