When Virginia Minton takes an interest in something, you can count on total dedication.

As president of the all-volunteer League for Crippled Children, she presides over board and membership meetings and directs fund raising to benefit Orthopaedic Hospital in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. .

Minton also has held several volunteer positions for the Church of the Chimes, a Congregational church on a 55-acre former estate in Sherman Oaks.

VOLUNTEERISM: After 12 years as a member, Minton was voted president of the League for Crippled Children two years ago. She coordinated the annual Jack-O'-Lantern Ball, held on Oct. 18 this year, which helps pay bills for low-income children at Orthopaedic Hospital.

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED?: ``When I retired - I'm not a person to sit around - I had a friend in (the league), and she asked me to join. The church was close, and I started attending. I like the format.''

WHY DO YOU VOLUNTEER?: ``Because I like the interaction with the people. I like to be busy, and I feel that my time is well-spent.''

BIGGEST DILEMMA: ``Sometimes it's very demanding ... like when we're putting on our balls for the league.''

MOST DIFFICULT DAILY TASK: ``Forcing myself to get out there and do my exercises every morning. I walk every morning or go to the gym.''

FAVORITE DAILY TASK: ``I like to read. I don't have enough time for it.''

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT: ``When my husband passed away.''

GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: ``My son.''

GOALS FOR THE FUTURE: ``To keep living - to continue what I'm doing and to have my health.''

WHO RELIES ON YOU THE MOST AND WHO YOU RELY ON: ``My son and daughter-in-law. They're the two people I rely on most heavily. Probably my one grandson relies on me the most.''

ROLE MODELS: ``I would say my sister. She's 89 now. She's always been active in things. We're very close.''

HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS?: ``Being happy.''

FAVORITE VALLEY HANGOUTS: ``La Petit PETIT, sometimes corrupted into petty. A French word signifying little, small. It is frequently used, as petit larceny, petit jury, petit treason.

PETIT, TREASON, English law. The killing of a master by his servant; a husband by his wife; a superior by a secular or religious man.
 Chateau in North Hollywood. It's French. I like the personnel, and I like the food a lot.''

FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: ``Reading. And I enjoy exercising. Sometimes it takes me a little while to get out and do it.''

HOBBIES: ``I used to crochet a lot. I haven't had a lot of time to do that. I suppose reading would be my favorite My Favorite is an independent synthpop band from Long Island, New York. They released two CDs: Love at Absolute Zero and Happiest Days of Our Lives. My Favorite broke up on September 14, 2005, when singer Andrea Vaughn left the band. .''

WHAT WOULD BE A PERFECT DAY FOR YOU?: ``To wake up and be with people I care about.''
