VOLUNTEERISM: ``Every year during the Christmas season, about 250 officers and 12 pilots work together collecting and delivering toys, clothing, school supplies and nonperishable food items for very poor children at La Sagrada Familia Mission in Mexicali, Mexico.

``The children of this mission are very poor and receive no assistance from private or government agencies. Through the public's help and generosity, these children have a memorable Christmas. The items are airlifted by 12 off-duty police officer pilots and flown to Calexico, where representatives from the mission drive across the border and meet us there at the airport. Some of us go across the border and meet with the children - observing their happy faces gives one a sense of fulfillment.''

(he had been one of my teachers in high school) had been voluntarily working with the mission for about 20 years. Our department talked it over and joined the cause. It's been five wonderful years ever since, and we're enjoying every part of it.''

WHY DO YOU VOLUNTEER?: ``In our department, we come in contact with so many people that are not as fortunate as we are, so why not take a step further and help our needy neighbors south of the border.''

MOST DIFFICULT TASK: ``Collecting the items is not hard at all. Most people are willing to help out a good cause. The difficult part of it is getting the volunteer off-duty police officer pilots and the officers together for the trip.''

FAVORITE DAILY TASK: ``Running with my dog after a day's work (Naut.) the account or reckoning of a ship's course for twenty-four hours, from noon to noon.
