Hernandez In 1995, Kassebaum retired from Hughes Aircraft Hughes Aircraft Company was a major aerospace and defense company founded by Howard Hughes. The group was based near Ballona Creek, in Culver City, California, USA, on the Pacific Coast. Hughes Aircraft was acquired by General Motors in 1985. after working 34 years at the company, most recently as a project control administrator. But it wasn't long before you could find Kassebaum volunteering her time at the Columbia West Hills Medical Center. ``It just makes one feel good knowing that somehow you have managed to put a smile on someone's face, lifting up their spirit by something you said, did, or just by simply being there at a given moment.'' I also get to take their pictures. It is so much fun!'' HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED?: ``I became interested when a neighbor and I were talking about how rewarding volunteer work can be. Pretty soon, I found myself volunteering at Northridge Hospital's gift shop and later on came over to Columbia West Hills Medical Center.'' WHY DO YOU VOLUNTEER?: ``I have the interest, and the time to do it - there are so many people who need someone at their side in life's happiest and toughest moments. It really doesn't take that much to make someone's day a bit brighter. I feel it's a privilege to do so.'' GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: ``This year I had the honor of being named Volunteer of the Year out of 250 volunteers at the hospital. Such an honor led me to represent the hospital at the Canoga Park Memorial Day Parade - I rode in a red '69 Cadillac convertible. That was such a thrilling thrill v. thrilled, thrill·ing, thrills v.tr. 1. To cause to feel a sudden intense sensation; excite greatly. 2. To give great pleasure to; delight. As a matter of fact, my husband and I just got back from a trip to Dublin, where we had a wonderful time. Tracing my family roots was partly the reason for going there.'' WHAT WOULD BE A PERFECT DAY FOR YOU?: ``I count my blessings every day - every day is perfect since I stopped smoking - I feel so good about it!''
