For three years, through the local branch of the international Optimist Club she created, Herbig has helped children. Every Friday she meets with 16 children for various activities - field trips to Dodger games or to the mountains, outings to a park in North Hollywood to help pick up trash, putting on puppet shows for children at homeless shelters Homeless shelters are temporary residences for homeless people. Usually located in urban neighborhoods, they are similar to emergency shelters. The primary difference is that homeless shelters are usually open to anyone, without regard to the reason for need. . She teaches them to paint - on canvas and on faces - do woodwork woodwork: see carpentry; furniture; intarsia; marquetry; veneer; wood carving.  and more, all with the intent of keeping the children out of trouble.
