Twenty-five years ago, Markovits founded and became chief executive officer for Penny Lane, a nonprofit agency that acts as a group home, foster-family agency and mental-health clinic for children.

Penny Lane's group home is the court-ordered destination for children who have failed to thrive in traditional foster homes. Currently, 104 children call Penny Lane home. Penny Lane's foster-family agency works with the other end of the system - recruiting, training and supervising foster parents. There currently are 104 foster parents in the program, overseeing 265 children. And the organization's third arm, its mental-health clinic, helps counsel children in both its foster home and group homes.

GOALS FOR THE FUTURE: ``My big dream is to develop a program taking over decayed and dilapidated buildings and developing transitory TRANSITORY. That which lasts but a short time, as transitory facts that which may be laid in different places, as a transitory action.  living for the staff and kids who graduate from the program.''

WHO DO YOU RELY ON?: ``I have an excellent staff of 10 people that have been with me as much as 20 years; I rely on them to help me out. I rely on the kids to give me strength, and my mom has always been there for me.''
