DAILY NEWS PEOPLE : HARRY VICKMAN.

Byline: - Sharon Cotal

When Harry Vickman was in the restaurant business, the only morning he could sleep in was Sunday. But now that he is retired, he wakes up every Sunday at 5 a.m. to get to the Encino Farmers Market, where he volunteers his time for Organization for the Needs of the Elderly (ONE).

Vickman, with fellow ONE board member Roberta Morgan, initiated the concept of the farmers market five years ago when they realized that they had a beautiful facility that was not being used on weekends. They saw the market as a way for seniors to interact with the community and as an innovative way to raise additional funds for ONE. It worked.

Vickman continues to be the business leader of the market, and can be found there every Sunday morning Sunday Morning may refer to:
  • "Sunday Morning (radio program)", a Canadian radio program formerly aired on CBC Radio One
  • CBS News Sunday Morning, a television news program on CBS in the United States

working with the market manager and even selling hot dogs. ``It's kind of a reversal from the schedule I had when I was working, but I enjoy it,'' Vickman said. ``I love going down there and seeing the market succeed.''

with the Los Angeles County court system from 1986 to 1991. A Guardian ad Litem acts as an advocate for children who have been removed from their parents and have no one to speak on their behalf.

Vickman has been a member of the Board of Directors for Organization for the Needs of the Elderly (ONE) for 10 years. ONE provides services to the senior population of the San Fernando Valley with two facilities: Valley Senior Service & Resource Center, which offers classes and services for active seniors; and Mark Taper Intergenerational in·ter·gen·er·a·tion·al
adj.
Being or occurring between generations: "These social-insurance programs are intergenerational and all
Center, which provides care for impaired seniors such as those with Alzheimer's disease Alzheimer's disease (ăls`hī'mərz, ôls–), degenerative disease of nerve cells in the cerebral cortex that leads to atrophy of the brain and senile dementia.  or those who have suffered strokes.

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED?: ``I was on another board of directors (Skid Row), and someone on that board was also on the one at ONE. He kept bragging about how great it was and asked me to come see the facilities. So I went and I decided that it was something I wanted to get involved in.''

WHY DO YOU VOLUNTEER?: ``I ran a restaurant for 40 years. That's a very hands-on business and I became a little isolated from the outside world. When I got ready to retire, the thought of not being useful anymore really scared me. I thought it was important to get involved in something where I would feel useful, and working at ONE makes me feel that way.''

BIGGEST DILEMMA: ``Retirement has been good to us. Our biggest dilemma is deciding where to go on our next trip - my wife and I travel a lot. We've been to China, Australia, New Zealand New Zealand (zē`lənd), island country (2005 est. pop. 4,035,000), 104,454 sq mi (270,534 sq km), in the S Pacific Ocean, over 1,000 mi (1,600 km) SE of Australia. The capital is Wellington; the largest city and leading port is Auckland. , India, Egypt, Europe and Africa.''

FAVORITE DAILY TASK: ``We have a special program at the Mark Taper Intergenerational Center called JOY - Joining Older and Younger. We run day care at the facility for children 6 months to 5 years old, and during the day we bring the children from the day care in to visit the seniors. When the seniors see those children, they get so excited - their faces just light up. I love to see that.''

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT: ``When I was a Guardian ad Litem, I had a youngster who was 15 years old, and I worked with him for two years trying to get him on the right track. His father was in the penitentiary penitentiary: see prison.  and his mother was on drugs. I visited him every week at the group home and told him if he got his general equivalency degree, I would put him through college. But it didn't work out. Just before he turned 18, the boy ran away from the home and never came back. That was a big disappointment, believe me.''

GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: ``Having three great kids who are each successful in their own way. What more could a person do in his life?''

GOALS FOR THE FUTURE: ``My main interest at ONE is the farmers market. We are always trying to make it bigger and more successful. Other than that, I just want to keep on doing what I'm doing. My wife and I want to continue our volunteer activities, and visit our children often at their homes in Idaho, Connecticut and San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay. .''

WHO RELIES ON YOU THE MOST AND WHO YOU RELY ON: ``My wife and I rely on each other for moral support - and even physical support from time to time. There's a lot of support that goes on between the two of us.''

ROLE MODELS: ``My mom and dad, because they were both so devoted to the family. That's the thing that counted most with them, and my wife and I have tried to emulate that in our lives and with our children.''

HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS?: ``At our age, success is seeing our children and grandchildren doing the things that they're doing and being successful at it. My wife and I feel really blessed with our family. We have been very fortunate in our lives, so we have tried to give back a little, and the crazy thing about giving back is that you always get more than you give.''

VALLEY HANGOUTS: ``Having been in the restaurant business for so long, we love dining out. Our favorite restaurant in the Valley is Pinot Bistro because it's a very cozy See COSE.  place and the food is wonderful. Every Sunday night Sunday Night, later named Michelob Presents Night Music, was an NBC late-night television show which aired for two seasons between 1988 and 1990 as a showcase for jazz and eclectic musical artists.  we go to our favorite sushi bar Noun 1. sushi bar - a bar where sushi is served
bar - a counter where you can obtain food or drink; "he bought a hot dog and a coke at the bar"
, Sushi Hirosuke.''

FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: ``Poking around in my greenhouse. I grow orchids and dwarf conifers.''

WHAT WOULD BE A PERFECT DAY FOR YOU?: ``To get up in the morning and work in the greenhouse for a couple of hours, spend a couple of hours at ONE, then later go out to eat at a nice restaurant. That's what I usually do anyway - I'd say most of my days are pretty perfect.''
