The Weavers are small passerine birds related to the finches.

These are seed-eating birds with rounded conical bills, most of which breed in sub-Saharan Africa, with fewer species in tropical
, having the help of a lot of family members during her brother-in-law's battle with cancer opened her eyes. It left her wondering how chronically ill patients without a large support network handle their ordeals.

``I was shy about doing this interview because I don't think I do very much,'' she said. ``But I thought if this helps get someone else to go out and do this, then everyone benefits.''

: Dorene volunteers through the TLC Home Hospice in Moorpark. She is assigned a patient - all of whom have six months or less to live - and spends a minimum of two hours once a week with him or her. Dorene takes it a step further by helping the patient's family as well. She assists in every way possible, from playing cards playing cards, parts of a set or deck, used in playing various games of chance or skill. The origin of playing cards is unknown, and almost as many theories exist as there are historians of the subject.  with the patient to doing grocery shopping for the primary care-giver.

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED?: ``When my husband's brother was dying of bowel cancer, he had a lot of family support. And I thought, what do families who don't have a large support system do? I saw an article in the Daily News about TLC Home Hospice and called them.''

WHY DO YOU VOLUNTEER?: ``I wanted to bring a little bit of sunshine into these people's lives. I've been so blessed in my life. My children are really great, caring, giving adults. I have a wonderful husband who allows me the freedom to be who I am.''

MOST DIFFICULT DAILY TASK: ``To fit in time for exercise.''

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT: ``When my mother was 83, someone broke into her home and beat her. She lost an eye. The good part is, I brought her home with me for her last two years.''

GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: ``My children; I'm very proud of every one of them.''

GOALS FOR THE FUTURE: ``I'm not a big goal-setter because things change that you have no control over. I'd like to keep volunteering and expand on it. I've always loved to travel and would like to do more.''

WHO RELIES ON YOU THE MOST AND WHO DO YOU RELY ON: ``My husband is very supportive. I have good and close friends I depend on who are a constant source of help. My children are also very supportive.''

ROLE MODELS: ``There are a lot of people in my life that I admire. For one: My boss always sees the good in everybody.''

HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS?: ``The theme at TLC is the Ralph Waldo Emerson quote: `To know that even one life has breathed easier, that is to have succeeded.' Material things can be taken away. Success is what you leave behind; your legacy.''

FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: ``I love live theater. I like walking and bicycling. I also like to travel.''

WHAT WOULD BE A PERFECT DAY FOR YOU?: ``Having all of my family together for some outdoor activity; softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  and a picnic.''
