DAILY NEWS PEOPLE: SAM SCHULTZ.Long-term dedication is why Sam Schultz volunteers. ``If something is to be done,'' he says, ``I'm there to do it, not to talk about it.'' The pride in his voice tells why he always puts in a full day of volunteer work. If he has to miss his usual day, he makes it up on another day that same week. You will never here Sam say, ``Maybe next time.'' AGE: 73 RESIDENCE: Van Nuys BORN AND RAISED IN: Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. The President of the United States is commander in chief of all the branches of the services and has ultimate control over most military matters. in 1945, he moved to the Fairfax area. Use of or reliance on volunteers, especially to perform social or educational work in communities. volunteerism : For seven years, Schultz has been volunteering one day a week at Kaiser Permanente Kaiser Permanente is an integrated managed care organization, based in Oakland, California, founded in 1945 by industrialist Henry J. Kaiser and physician Sidney R. Garfield. Medical Center's Valley Center of Learning, working with nurse educators A nurse educator is a nurse who teaches and prepares licensed practical nurses (LPN) and registered nurses (RN) for entry into practice positions. Nurse Educators also teach in graduate programs at Master’s and doctoral level which prepare advanced practice nurses, nurse to put together seminar books and educational supplies. He also works with the hospital's skill-enhancement program, which provides employees and the public with English classes and preparation for U.S. citizenship tests. Schultz also has volunteered at Temple Beth Ami, now Shomrei Torah Synagogue synagogue (sĭn`əgŏg) [Gr.,=assembly], in Judaism, a place of assembly for worship, education, and communal affairs. The origins of the institution are unclear. One tradition dates it to the Babylonian exile of the 6th cent. B.C. , for the last five years. When the synagogue recently had electrical problems, Schultz put together a quick reference guide on the building's electrical panels and outlets so they could pinpoint any problems. HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED?: His daughter Linda works at Kaiser and encouraged him to volunteer. He began helping the synagogue when he became a member. WHY DO YOU VOLUNTEER?: ``To kill some of the time in the day. When you retire, you think, `What are you going to do?' Hobbies get kind of old. Travel gets kind of old.'' BIGGEST DILEMMA: Schultz can no longer walk his daily five miles because of bad feet. ``It's like gravel in your shoes.'' FAVORITE DAILY TASK: Just getting up in the morning and having breakfast is joy enough. ``There's another day, no aches, no pain.'' His stretching exercises help. GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: ``Being as old as I am. My father passed away at the age of 62. Being as healthy as I am.'' GOALS FOR THE FUTURE: ``I don't think that far ahead. I don't plan that far ahead. I think of my anniversary and vacations.'' Everything else he takes day by day. WHO RELIES ON YOU THE MOST AND WHO YOU RELY ON: His wife no longer drives, so she relies on him to get around. ``I don't rely on anyone but myself. When you're healthy, everything is fine. When I get sick, I rely on my wife.'' ROLE MODELS: His dad. He admired his strength, will and the fact that he was always there when needed. HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS?: ``Not dollars and cents. If a person can live and be happy and have enough capital to keep them comfortable, that's good enough. But the biggest thing is not looking to the Joneses.'' FAVORITE VALLEY HANGOUTS: The Century movie theater at Victory Boulevard Victory Boulevard is a major thoroughfare on Staten Island, measuring approximately 8.0 miles (12.87 km) and stretching from the west shore community of Travis to the upper east shore communities of St. George and Tompkinsville. and Coldwater Canyon in North Hollywood. FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: Going to the movies or for long drives with his wife. HOBBIES: ``Jigsaw A Web server from the W3C that incorporates advanced features and uses a modular design similar to the Apache Web server. Jigsaw supports HTTP 1.1 and provided an experimental platform for HTTP-NG. See HTTP-NG and Amaya. puzzles. I always have one running in case I get bored.''
