DAILY NEWS INVITATIONAL ROUNDUP: PLENTY IN RESERVE SAN FERNANDO BACKUPS ALMOST BEAT QUARTZ HILL.

With no chances to make the Daily News Tournament championship game on Saturday, San Fernando coach Armando Gomez put eight non-starters in the lineup Monday so they could get playing time before the team starts Valley Mission league play next week.

As it turned out, the players gave him a pleasant surprise by playing evenly with visiting Quartz Hill before falling 7-5 on Monday.

Quartz Hill (4-1) rallied in the top of the seventh inning, scoring two runs to defeat the Tigers (2-3).

With the score tied 5-5, Matt Lopez and Gavin Brandon (3-4, 2 RBI) had back-to-back doubles and Dustin Petzold added an insurance run with an RBI single.

Brandon finished 3 for 4 with two RBI and scoring two runs.

San Fernando was led by sophomore second baseman Rudy Lemos, who usually starts at second base but doesn't bat. In this game, Lemos was 2 for 2, including an RBI single that tied the score at 5 in the bottom of the sixth.

--Granada Hills 6, Highland 4: John Voita and Dale Curry each had two hits and two RBI as the host Highlanders scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to come back from a 4-0 deficit.

Voita started the rally with a solo home run at the beginning of the inning. He recorded another hit that inning as Granada Hills (3-2) batted around the order.

Jason Kubel was 2 for 3 with two RBI for the Bulldogs (3-2).

--Grant 8, Franklin 1: Felipe Tetelboin smacked a three-run homer in the second inning and added a sacrifice fly as the Lancers won their first game of the tournament.

Brian Hauser and Arturo Gurrola added extra base hits for the Lancers (1-4). Hauser entered the game in the fourth inning and belted a double off the wall,

while Gurrola hit a triple in the sixth and scored two runs.

Moises Saldivar pitched a complete-game two-hitter and had five strikeouts for Grant.

--Cleveland 6, Glendale 5: Andrew Strickland was 4 for 5 and had three RBI as the host Cavaliers bounced back from a 5-2 deficit. Cleveland of Reseda (2-3) tied the score with a three-run seventh sparked by Strickland, who hit a two-run double before scoring on Nick Arroyo's base hit that sent the game into extra innings.

Strickland added his third RBI in the final inning - a single that scored Nick Alabise from third with the winning run.

Bryan Aguila was 3 for 4 with two RBI and pitched the first three innings for Glendale (2-3).

--Birmingham 7, Palmdale 1: Lucio Tapia hit a two-run homer in the third inning as the host Patriots took a five-run lead and never looked back.

Birmingham (4-1) was led defensively by pitcher Neil Morrow. The junior left-hander threw just 75 pitches while striking out five and walking two while winning his second game from the mound.

Rosalio Garcia was 3 for 3 and drove in two runs for Birmingham.

--Monroe 6, Antelope Valley 1: Eduardo Felix led Monroe of North Hills with a two-out bases-clearing triple in the second inning as the host Vikings (2-3) cruised to victory.

Vince Madalon pitched a solid game for Monroe, improving his record to 1-1 with the victory over Antelope Valley (3-2).

--North Hollywood 16, Paraclete 11: Mike Rodriguez was 4 for 4 with two RBI and Lito Figueroa was 2 for 2 with four RBI as the host Huskies sent 15 batters to the plate in an 11-run fourth inning to take the game off Paraclete's hands.

Rob Fockaert, one of three pitchers in the marathon inning, led Paraclete (1-4) by going 2 for 4 with two RBI.

Erick Melera's only hit, a two run single in the sixth, helped North Hollywood (2-3) extend the lead before the game was called because of darkness. Melera finished with four RBI on the day.

--Kennedy 10, Lancaster 0: Danny Mata held the visiting Eagles (4-1) to two hits, by Josh Pratt and Darryl Smith.

Mata walked one batter and struck out three.

Phil Avlas was 3 for 4 with an RBI and scored three runs for the Cougars (2-3).

--Notre Dame 10, South Gate 0: James Rivero had a double and a triple to lift the Knights (2-3) in a game at Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks.

Senior pitcher Tim Meichtry pitched four scoreless innings to pick up his first victory.
