decided to bench players for disciplinary reasons.

``Halfway through fifth period, my JV coach came in and told me I was playing with the varsity,'' Braun said. ``Then he told me I was starting and I was nervous.''

Braun's smooth fielding and confidence while playing with the varsity during the winter prompted Thompson to make the move. The coach said he's open to keeping Braun on the team.

``I was really excited,'' Braun said, ``but I was nervous, too.

``Once I got my first at-bat, I calmed down. Then my second at-bat, I just got all of it.

``I have to say it's my biggest (game). It was real exciting.''

Braun is slated to be with the Highlanders (1-0) again today when they host Highland.

New field, new hope: Calabasas shows off its upgraded field today when the Coyotes host Conoga Park.

The outfield fence was installed Wednesday and the Coyotes were expecting to practice on the resodded infield for the first time Thursday.

Calabasas hopes the new facilities help restore the Coyotes' pride, which faded with last year's season. After years of dominating the Frontier League The Frontier League, based in Troy, Illinois, is a professional, independent baseball organization located in the Midwestern United States and Western Pennsylvania. It operates mostly in cities not served by Major or Minor League Baseball teams and is not affiliated with either. , Calabasas went 12-13 overall and finished third in league.

The freshman, JV and varsity teams shared the JV field while the varsity field was under construction. The result was worth the inconvenience to restore a field run down by years of use not only by the Coyotes but youth leagues and soccer teams playing in the outfield, according to according to

``It looks beautiful,'' he said.

How the Coyotes will look is another story. The team was awaiting the arrival of its uniforms the day before its first game.

Calabasas also plays at home Saturday when it hosts Harvard-Westlake.

It runs in the family: Last season, John Ennis shut down the opposition as the ace of Monroe's staff. Ennis graduated, but his brother Ryan picked up where John left off.

The senior pitched a five-inning no-hitter in Monroe's season-opener against Franklin on Tuesday. The mercy rule ended the 10-0 game after 4-1/2 innings.
