DAILY NEWS HONORED THREE KEY AWARDS GO TO NEWSPAPER.

CORONADO - The Daily News of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  won three top awards for large newspapers Saturday for publishing the best journalism in the state in three key areas, the California Newspaper Publishers Association announced.

The Daily News won:

--First place for public service reporting.

--First place for editorial comment.

--First place for local spot news coverage.

The Daily News competed with the major newspapers in California <noinclude>:List is in order of place of publication</noinclude>
  • Alameda Times-Star - Alameda
  • Auburn Journal - Auburn
  • Bakersfield Californian - Bakersfield
  • The Daily Dispatch - Barstow
 - those with more than 200,000 circulation. The Daily News' circulation is about 201,000 daily.

, a 112-year-old newspaper association, announced the winners in its annual Better Newspapers Contest for last year at a luncheon Saturday in Coronado during its annual convention.

The first-place award for public service recognized the Daily News' extensive coverage of the Belmont Learning Center This Belmont Learning Center contains information about a building currently under construction.

The first-place award for spot news was for the newspaper's coverage of the Aug. 10, 1999, shootings at the Jewish Community Center in Granada Hills.

Daily News Editor David J David J. Haskins (b. April 24, 1957, in Northampton, England) is a British alternative rock musician. He was the bassist for the seminal gothic rock band Bauhaus. Life and work . Butler praised the newspaper's staff for winning the three key awards.

``Winning three first-place awards in such important categories, when you're the smallest paper in the group and competing against the state's very largest newspapers, is a tremendous testament to the extraordinary efforts by the staff of the Daily News,'' Butler said.

 that the judges for the contest believe that the Daily News performed the best public service for its readers of any large paper in the state, had the best editorial of any large newspaper in the state, and published the best breaking news coverage of any large paper in the state.

``These are the basics of excellent journalism and indicate how a newspaper can best serve its readers,'' he said.

CNPA gave awards to a total of 59 daily newspapers and 79 weeklies in a range of circulation categories.

Among smaller dailies of 75,001 to 200,000 circulation, two sister newspapers of the Daily News in the Los Angeles Newspaper Group The Los Angeles Newspaper Group is an umbrella group of local daily newspapers published in the greater Los Angeles area by MediaNews Group. The news coverage of the newspapers are mainly local stories.  also won CNPA awards.

The Press-Telegram of Long Beach won second-place awards in feature story and environmental/agricultural resources reporting, while the San Bernardino County Sun won first place in the photo essay contest.
