DAILY NEWS GIRLS' BASKETBALL ALL-AREA TEAM : PLAYER OF THE YEAR.Byline: Daily News DAMARIS HINOJOSA 5-10, Guard-Forward, Moorpark For three years, she put up eye-popping numbers in a league with small schools. When Moorpark went to the big-time, Hinojosa was ready. The area's best all-around player averaged 26.2 points, 12.1 rebounds and 6.1 assists and the Musketeers nearly went unbeaten on their way to winning the Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. Moorpark finished 25-3 this season and advanced to the Southern Section Division II-A semifinals. The Musketeers, who were 95-12 with Hinojosa in the lineup in four years, played in the Division II-A final in 1997 and lost to Brea Olinda. Hinojosa, who was an All-Daily News selection last year, entered Moorpark in '95 as a prodigy who had played on a traveling boys' all-star team in the eighth grade. In four seasons, she had more than 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 400 assists and 600 steals. She was recruited by Stanford but ended up committing to Pepperdine, where she is expected to be one of the Waves' top reserves next season. A pinpoint passer, Hinojosa is expected to play point guard in college. She averaged 23.3 points per game last year when the Conquistadores needed a scorer. With Blumfield as the key player the past two seasons, the Conquistadores went 44-7 and won the West Valley League twice. She wasn't the flashiest player, nor the most athletic. A two-time All-Daily News selection, Udeze averaged 21.1 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.8 blocked shots. She could dominate a game inside and frequently was called upon to bring the ball up the court as the point guard. The Wolverines have won three consecutive Mission League titles with Udeze, who holds the school career records for points (1,362) and rebounds (1,158). She has yet to decide on a college. MARKIA DERBY 5-8, Forward, North Hollywood Which player was the real Derby: the quick scorer who could score 10 points in a quarter or the enigmatic free spirit who could go long stretches without touching the ball? We'll never know, but when Derby was at her best she was almost unstoppable for the Huskies, who advanced to the City Section semifinals two consecutive years. Derby averaged 18.2 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists for North Hollywood, which is 47-9 over the past two seasons. KATE BECKLER 5-8, Guard, Alemany She's not a fiery leader, nor is she physically imposing. But no player is as feared in the Mission League as this scorer, who averaged 24.0 points per game and led the Indians to the Southern Section Division III-AA semifinals. Just a junior, Beckler is already a two-time All-Daily News selection and a potential Division I prospect. What position she should play at the next level is up to her; Beckler has played both guard positions since she was moved up to the varsity as a freshman. Her dribbling and penetrating skills make her look like an attractive point-guard prospect. She'll have one more season under respected coach Melissa Hearlihy to hone her game. SINNAMONN GARRETT 5-10, Forward, Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest. So much is expected of Garrett, and she has been around so long it hardly seems she still has one year left at Crescenta Valley. The versatile junior stepped in as the floor leader after the graduation of Michelle Greco and Tara Gregory and helped lead the Falcons to a share of their fourth consecutive Pacific League title and a 22-5 record. Garrett, who stayed at Crescenta Valley through summer-long rumors of a transfer, averaged 18.3 points and 6.8 rebounds. When the Falcons needed Garrett to play point guard at the tough Archbishop Mitty tournament in late December, she filled in and Crescenta Valley won two games.
