DAILY NEWS FILLS NEW GM POST.

The Daily News of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  announced Tuesday that veteran Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  newspaper advertising executive Bob Gray has been appointed to the newly created post of general manager, effective March 1.

The appointment was made by Ike Massey, publisher of the Daily News and president and chief executive officer of the Los Angeles Newspaper Group The Los Angeles Newspaper Group is an umbrella group of local daily newspapers published in the greater Los Angeles area by MediaNews Group. The news coverage of the newspapers are mainly local stories. , who said, ``Bob Gray has great experience in sales, marketing and circulation in addition to a keen grasp of newspaper operations.''

Gray, 48, will handle day-to-day business functions of the Daily News, including advertising, marketing, circulation, production and finance. The news and editorial departments of the Daily News will continue to report to Massey.

Since January 1998, Gray has been advertising director and assistant to the publisher of the Long Beach Press-Telegram The Long Beach Press-Telegram is a major daily newspaper published in Long Beach, California. Gray previously held a number of advertising management positions for many years at the Riverside Press-Enterprise and at Cox Publications in Phoenix. Earlier in his career, Gray held circulation supervisory positions with the Riverside newspaper.

``I look forward to working with the employees of the Daily News and continuing the tradition that has exemplified them as one of the leading newspapers in the industry,'' Gray said.

Last month it was announced that the Donrey Media newspapers in Southern California, including the Inland Valley California's Inland Valley is a region that inlcudes parts of San Bernadino, and Riverside counties. As the name implies, the Inland Valley is situated on the inland side of the Santa Ana Mountains in southern California. There are few geographic boundaries to define the area.  Daily Bulletin in Ontario, will merge with the Los Angeles Newspaper Group.

Massey said Gray's appointment will allow him to continue to oversee the Daily News as publisher as well as to work on the growing Los Angeles Newspaper Group operations.

``I'm pleased to be able to have someone the caliber of Bob Gray available for promotion within our group,'' Massey said. ``This will give me more time and freedom to work more with our ever-expanding cluster of newspapers in Southern California.''

Gray and his family moved from Michigan to California 40 years ago, when he was 8. He and his wife, Faith, have three children.
