Knowing he had to leave early to attend the school prom, Westlake High's Andrew Doupe didn't waste a single moment, winning the pregame home run derby This is about the Major League Baseball contest. For the 1959 television show of the same name, see Home Run Derby (TV series).

The Home Run Derby is an event played prior to the Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

Doupe hit six home runs during the first round - including several majestic shots to the delight of the crowd - then won the playoff round over co-finalists Brad Rice of L.A. What made Doupe's performance especially impressive was the fact he hadn't seen live pitching since May 12 because Westlake failed to qualify for the Southern Section playoffs.

``I'm just honored to be a part of the whole thing because there's been a lot of legendary players who have played in this game over the years,'' Doupe said. ``I haven't played for a while, so I've just been taking a break.''

During the regular season, Doupe hit just three home runs and batted .406 in 69 at-bats. After collecting a trophy for winning the home run contest, Doupe was 1 for 1 with two RBI RBI

Doupe, who plans to play at Princeton while majoring in business beginning this fall, is the second Westlake player in the past three years to win the Milligan home run derby. Cody Cipriano won in 2003.

 of Vasquez appeared to be 100 percent - happily slapping high-fives during player introductions - after missing both pregame practices because of injuries sustained during a traffic accident.

 Stephen Mercier of Santa Clarita Christian came through with perhaps the best defensive play of the game. While running toward second to cover the bag on a hit-and-run, he switched directions back to his left to field El Camino Real's Sammy Donabedian's hard grounder, then threw in time to first for the out.

--Bell doesn't play: East pitcher Trevor Bell of Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta opted not to play after being drafted 37th overall by the Angels. However, he showed up for introductions, then signed autographs in the stands during the game.
