DAILY NEWS ALL-STAR SOFTBALL GAME NOTEBOOK: CITY PLAYERS WANT A LITTLE MORE RESPECT.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Daily News Staff Writer

Patty Del Real and Angie De La Cerda of Kennedy High, Veronica Ramos of Sylmar and Nikki Shaw of Verdugo Hills all have performed impressively in practice for the East, and the foursome looks to honor the City Section in a game featuring mostly Southern Section athletes.

Del Real, who said she is weighing offers from Brigham Young, Hawaii and New Mexico New Mexico, state in the SW United States. At its northwestern corner are the so-called Four Corners, where Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah meet at right angles; New Mexico is also bordered by Oklahoma (NE), Texas (E, S), and Mexico (S).  State, was the leading pitcher in the City with a 17-3 record and 0.16 ERA. ``The Southern Section probably gets more recognition but the City gets its fair share,'' Del Real said at practice Thursday. ``We're all the same really, because every game we each have to go out and prove ourselves.''

De La Cerda, a catcher who batted .426, might be playing her last softball game ever. She said she won't participate in summer softball but might play for College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. . De La Cerda theorized that Southern Section softball players are perceived as better because they get more publicity.

``Newspapers don't go to City games as much, so this is our chance to prove ourselves,'' De La Cerda said. ``It's a great opportunity and a lot of fun to be involved with the best of the best.''

Shaw, who batted .515 and was a catcher, shortstop, outfielder and pitcher for Verdugo Hills this season, hit several home runs in batting practice.

Under the tag: Melissa Rawson of Highland recently started a summer job and missed the first all-star practice. She convinced her boss to let her participate in Thursday drills, barely arriving in time.

``I had to get dressed Verb 1. get dressed - put on clothes; "we had to dress quickly"; "dress the patient"; "Can the child dress by herself?"

Rawson confirmed that Highland teammate/sister Natalie Rawson, one of the top returning sophomore shortstops in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, , is quitting softball, a major blow for Highland next season.

``Natalie actually didn't want to play this season,'' Rawson said. ``But I said, `This is my last year, you have to play!' ''

Grass greener for Ivey: No one is more pleased than Amanda Ivey of Burbank about participating in the all-star game An all-star game is an exhibition game played by the best players in their sports league. The players are often chosen by a popular vote of fans of the sport and the game often occurs at the halfway point of the regular season, although this is not the case for some all-star games .

Burbank went 0-10 in the Foothill League, and shortstop Ivey batted .382 in 34 league at-bats (.375 overall) but had no RBI RBI

``I'm so excited,'' Ivey said. ``It was so frustrating for me this season. I thought I had a really good season, but with just two senior starters we had a lack of talent. We were just too young.''

Here's the plan: East coach Coy Ray of Quartz Hill said he anticipates some good combinations through nine innings.

He said Annette Ramirez of Alemany is extremely impressive at shortstop.
