DAILY NEWS ALL-AREA SALUTE TO SOUTH PARK.

COACH OF THE YEAR

HARRY WELCH, CANYON

Canyon Following the Cowboys' 27-13 victory in the Div. I state championship bowl game, Welch said it was an honor for him to coach on the same field as Concord De La Salle's Bob Ladoceur.

Although he might have won 129 fewer games and 15 less section titles than Ladoceur, there was no disputing Welch's place among the state's great football coaches when he walked off the field Dec. 16 at Home Depot The Home Depot (NYSE: HD) is an American retailer of home improvement and construction products and services.

``(Bob Ladoceur) is a great man and a great coach. He's at the pinnacle of the pantheon of coaches and nothing in my mind has diminished that (after our victory),'' said Welch, whose team finished ranked No. 3 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports.

``(That win) was a beautiful, beautiful moment for me. To be with these young men and this community is one of the great things in my life.''

After winning three consecutive section titles from 1983-85, Welch is 59-16 since returning to the Canyon program in 2001, including two straight Foothill League titles and back-to-back section championships. He became only the fourth area football coach to win five division titles and is believed to be the only coach in state history to win consecutive titles two decades apart.

itself with its come- from-behind 24-22 victory over Moorpark in the Northern Division final at Home Depot Center.

Adam Barry's 13-yard touchdown pass to Nick Karam with 1:15 remaining, followed by Jake Lins' 2-point conversion pass to Ryan Murry, helped Moorpark rally from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to take a 22-21 lead. But the Cowboys' heroics ended the Musketeers' season the same way it began -- with a loss to Canyon.

It was also the second consecutive finals setback for Moorpark, following a 27-7 loss to St. Bonaventure of Ventura in last season's Div. IV title game.

Longshore passed for 302 yards, including a 78-yard touchdown to Stephen Wirthlin and a 30-yarder to DiLuigi. Barry also ran for a touchdown for Moorpark, which suffered a 33-14 setback Aug. 31 at Canyon.

For most ninth-graders, 15 tackles, a sack and an interception return for a touchdown would be a good season -- on the frosh/soph team.
