A MAN gunned down by four masked murderers as he collected a takeaway was the victim of a hit, say police.

Rohan "Shonn" Ricketts, 34, was attacked by gunmen and fled back into the Indian shop's kitchen in Leeds.

But the men - at least two of them armed with handguns - forced open the door and fired four or five shots, killing Ricketts.

Several streets around the scene were closed as forensic experts looked for clues.

Detective superintendant Steve Payne said: "It was clear a number of shots had been fired. A man in the rear of the takeaway had been shot and died. The victim sought refuge by diving over the counter into the kitchen but the door was forced down and shots were fired at him, which proved fatal. The gunmen then fled on foot up the street."

All the attackers were wearing dark sports clothing with hoods and balaclavas. Det Supt Payne added:

"There were no other customers in the shop at the time of the shooting and the only people present were the owners and kitchen staff. Our focus is to trace the killer. This has left Rohan's six children without a father."
