DA VINCI EMAIL V2.02 BRINGS NEW FEATURES AND FUNCTIONALITY
TO WINDOWS EMAIL; RECEIVES HIGH PRAISE FROM BETA SITES
RALEIGH, N.C., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Da Vinci Systems Corp. announced today that eMAIL for Windows v2.02, their newest product, would ship Oct. 12.
In response to customer demand for greater functionality in Windows eMAIL and consistency between Da Vinci's DOS and Windows products, the new Windows eMAIL incorporates all of the "power" features from eMAIL v2.01 for DOS previously absent from Windows eMAIL. A review of the eMAIL for Windows feature set shows that it and eMAIL for DOS are now on the same development platform. Key among these features are: File Folders, Attachment Viewers and Spell-checking.
Additionally, eMAIL v2.02 takes advantage of the Windows development environment and offers unique features like multiple document interface, DDE, multimedia/sound support, Forms and enhanced GUI. Windows eMAIL v2.02 is one of the most Windows-integrated mail applications available today.
"We're pleased to see that Da Vinci really took advantage of the Windows environment in their eMAIL v2.02 development," said William Hagler, senior process engineer at Bechtel Corp., a Windows eMAIL beta test site. "The Windows-specific enhancements like DDE and multi-media support make the program more useful and friendly."
Like all Da Vinci products, eMAIL v2.02 for Windows is optimized for NetWare. Da Vinci eMAIL is easy to install, set up and administer on a NetWare network because it reads the NetWare bindery and automatically creates mailboxes using the NetWare user list. Da Vinci eMAIL also offers the option of using NetWare security, so end-users need not have separate passwords for NetWare and eMAIL. Additionally, since Da Vinci eMAIL is a native NetWare MHS application, no MHS gateway is required to access the network services provided by NetWare.
"We look for two things in any messaging application we might put on our system: solid technology and tight integration with NetWare. With Da Vinci eMAIL NetWare integration is a given. What's more, their support of the NetWare MHS standard means we can be assured of its compatibility with other MHS applications," said Hagler.
"Windows is a great environment for application development because so much of the code necessary to execute basic tasks is already in there. You don't have to re-invent the wheel to make a Windows application work hard for the user." Said Tony Edwards, director of Da Vinci product development. "We're also especially pleased with the international language support eMAIL for Windows will offer. French, German and Spanish versions will be available within 30 days of the English version."
Features in Da Vinci eMAIL v2.02 that take advantage of Windows programming include:
 1) DDE -- Support for Microsoft's Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) is written right into Windows eMAIL. It performs the standard DDE functions like sending e-mail messages directly form another Windows application. In addition it can also be configured to create and distribute messages based on established criteria. For example, Windows eMAIL and Excel could be linked so that when a given spreadsheet cell reaches a predetermined value -- e.g. sales goal for the month -- a message is automatically sent to the appropriate parties.
 2) MDI -- Da Vinci's unique application of MDI allows several messages to "live on the screen" simultaneously. Windows eMAIL objects such as messages, attachments, forms and drafts can be managed independently on the Windows desktop as icons or self-contained windows.
 3) Multi-media support -- Windows eMAIL makes use of Windows 3.1.wav sound capabilities. Users can assign digital sound to eMAIL events such as incoming mail notification the same way they assign sound to Windows 3.1 events. Additionally, with any Windows 3.1 compatible sound board and microphone, Windows eMAIL messages can have a voice attachment.
