DA'S OFFICE PROBES ELECTION CLAIMS : IMPROPER IDENTIFICATION OF VOTERS, DENIAL OF BALLOTS AMONG ALLEGED VIOLATIONS.Byline: Patrick McGreevy Daily News Staff Writer District attorney investigators have begun interviewing Los Angeles City Council City Clerk In the United States, a City Clerk is an elected or appointed official who is responsible as the official keeper of the municipal records. In some places, the Clerk may be known as the "Village Clerk" or "Town Clerk". Mike Carey told the council that prosecutors specifically are looking into claims that some poll workers improperly asked voters to provide identification, allowed electioneering and failed to provide the full ballots to voters. They also are investigating whether someone called poll workers assigned to some precincts pre·cinct n. 1. a. City Councilwoman Rita Walters Rita Walters (1930-) is currently the commissioner of the Los Angeles Public Library. Prior to this position, she served on the Los Angeles City Council representing the 9th district. During that time, she chaired the Arts, Health & Humanities Committee. , whose central city 9th District is the focus of many of the allegations, said she also has been interviewed by investigators from the district attorney's election fraud division. Councilman Nate Holden Nathaniel "Nate" R. Holden (1929-) served on the Los Angeles City Council from 1987 to 2002. He previously served a term on the California State Senate and was Assistant Chief Deputy to then Los Angeles County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn. said a member of his staff is set to be interviewed. ``It appears it was done intentionally,'' Holden Holden, town (1990 pop. 14,628), Worcester co., central Mass., a residential suburb of Worcester; settled 1723, set off and inc. 1741. The councilman said a delay in the opening of a polling site could benefit a candidate who may be counting on a low voter-turnout to win re-election. Carey said his own investigation has not yet identified poll workers who were called and told not to show up. The city clerk also said his office is still trying to check allegations that some voters were asked for identification. The clerk said such a request would be proper if the voter was not listed on the voter rolls and wanted to register to vote on the day of the election. However, he said asking for identification from other voters is not proper. ``In one sense that could be very innocent and in another sense that would constitute a felony felony (fĕl`ənē), any grave crime, in contrast to a misdemeanor, that is so declared in statute or was so considered in common law. ,'' he said. Carey also said his office had to send out workers to tell people not to engage in electioneering at polling places, but he does not believe there were widespread violations.
