DA: Deutsche Bank site worker a thief.


Manhattan District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau announced the indictment of the former purchasing agent for the John Galt Corporation for stealing $1.2 million from the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation and Arch Insurance Group, Galt's bonding company, during the abatement and deconstruction of the Deutsche Bank building.

Robert Chiarappa, 45, has been indicted on multiple grand larceny charges. Chiarappa pleaded not guilty.

And investigation has revealed that Gait was the subcontractor hired to abate and deconstruct the Deutsche Bank building. As the purchasing agent for Galt, Chiarappa was responsible for ordering and approving payment for all abatement supplies and materials delivered to the the site.

The indictment charges that between Sept. 2006 through Oct. 2007, Chiarappa instructed various vendors to submit false invoices for goods never delivered to the project. Chiarappa approved these invoices in exchange for a share of the illicitly obtained payments in the form of cash, checks, jewelry, trips, cars, and construction supplies and materials for his own personal use.

Chiarappa is charged with four counts of Grand Larceny in the Second Degree, a class C felony, which is punishable by up to 15 years in prison; and two counts of Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, a class D felony, which is punishable by up to 7 years in prison.
