D2K announces strategic partnership with Cincom; TOTAL FrameWork object-relational database delivers the solution for warehouse metadata.

ORLANDO Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 27, 1997--D2K D2K - Defender 2000 (Atari Jaguar game)
D2K - Dragonz 2000 (gaming clan)
Incorporated announced today at the DCI Data Warehouse Conference that it has entered into a strategic partnership with Cincom Systems (Cincom Systems, Inc., Cincinnati, OH, www.cincom.com) One of the largest and most experienced software companies in the world. Founded in 1968 by Thomas Nies, who has the distinction of being the longest-serving company chief in the industry, Cincom sells manufacturing, financial and sales force automation applications. It was the first U.S. software firm to promote the concept of a database management system, and it provided the first DBMS delivered by an independent software vendor., Inc. Cincom has provided its TOTAL FrameWork Object Relational Database Hierarchical, Network and Object Databases
In non-relational "hierarchical" and "network" databases, records in one file contain embedded pointers to the locations of records in another, such as customers to orders and vendors to purchases. These are fixed links set up ahead of time to speed up daily processing. Another type of non-relational database is the "object database," which stores data consistent with their object model (see object database).
(ORDB ORDB - Open Relay Database) to be included as the repository in D2K's Tapestry(TM) end-to-end knowledge distribution solution. The TOTAL FrameWork ORDB is embedded as the Tapestry catalog to enable the storage and retrieval of objects, as well as creation of an open metadata store.

Edward Young, president and CEO of D2K noted, "We selected Cincom's TOTAL FrameWork object relational database because it enables us to offer advanced capabilities to our customers. An object-relational repository delivers superior performance levels compared to those of a traditional relational database and Cincom has invested a lot of effort in optimizing their version of UniSQL An object-oriented DBMS from Korea Computer Communications, (KCOM, Ltd.), Seoul, Korea. Developed by Dr. Kim Won at UniSQL, Inc. in Austin, Texas in 1991, KCOM acquired the source code and sales rights in 1997. UniSQL/X is a relational and object-oriented DBMS for Unix servers that provides SQL and object access to the database. UniSQL/M adds object-oriented capability to SQL Server, Oracle, Ingres and other relational DBMSs. For more information, visit www.unisql.com.. Secondly, it is important to us that Cincom is renowned for their large install base and very loyal customers. They have proven field and customer support and we are proud to be associated with such an organization."

"Our agreement with Cincom reflects our overall approach to strategic partnerships. Our goal is to locate partners who each have a unique characteristic that enhances our product line. Our program focuses on creating strategic alliances with companies interested in mutually synergistic technology partnerships," Young continued.

Ed Lennon, manager of market development for Cincom's TOTAL FrameWork Group noted, "We believe Tapestry represents a breakthrough for the data-warehouse/data-mart industry. By embedding the TOTAL FrameWork object-relational database A database that provides both relational and object database capabilities. See universal server. in Tapestry, D2K is providing the first complete information solution focused on providing the benefits of object-relational performance. Additionally, TOTAL FrameWork acts as a binding agent between Tapestry's Java and C++ applications and the object-relational repository. This delivers the functionality of two distinct application languages to enable object-relational performance through a browser."

Judy Rawls, vice president of worldwide marketing for D2K added, "The TOTAL FrameWork object-relational database provides Tapestry components with better performance and manipulation of the metadata as well as creation of an SQL API for integration with other warehouse tools. By sharing Tapestry metadata via the SQL API, the UniSQL catalog allows us to accommodate the variety of SQL-based tools, such as query and reporting tools, which could benefit from the warehouse metadata. The relationships in a warehouse can be quite complex, and can be even further complicated with versions. This creates a scenario where object storage and manipulation are mandatory for performance and manageability."

The Tapestry Product

Tapestry incorporates an industrial-strength client/server architecture and includes a publish-and-subscribe model; three-tiered topography; application templates; a forum for workflow communications and cross-organizational collaboration; and an object-relational catalog.

The Tapestry catalog, which includes a search engine and version control, is the heart of the Tapestry end-to-end knowledge distribution solution. The catalog coordinates the communication between all of the Tapestry components. Actions and events occurring within Tapestry are documented in the catalog, embedding the TOTAL FrameWork ORDB as the catalog maximizes the capabilities in performing these functions. For the end user, the operation of the object-relational database within the catalog is transparent.
