AUSTIN, Texas -- New SMPS Offers Improved Dynamic Range Through Voltage Controlled Output, While Meeting the Demands of Today's Multi-Channel Audio Products

D2Audio, the world's only manufacturer of intelligent digital amplifiers, and Celetronix, a leading producer of power supplies, have partnered to create a switched mode power supply (SMPS) specifically designed for the high power requirements of today's demanding multi-channel digital audio products, which are smaller, more efficient, cooler and lower cost. The 350 Watt power supply, the first product from this partnership, is designed to perfectly complement the high performance of D2Audio's amplifiers for home theaters, audio video receivers (AVRs) and high power DVD receivers.

Specifically, D2Audio and Celetronix created the new SMPS which meets the demands of multi-channel audio products' peak power requirements. The peak power requirements of multi-channel audio amplifier products can be three to four times that of the continuous power requirements. By focusing on a design that optimizes for each of these application aspects, the D2Audio/Celetronix power supply design is smaller and more efficient, resulting in lower heat and lower cost than a traditional SMPS solution that would offer the same audio performance. From an audio performance perspective this design approach more closely emulates the characteristics of the traditional linear power supplies that have historically been used in this application, allowing for the increased dynamic headroom that is so desirable. The new switched mode power supply is specially designed to enable intelligent control from the D2Audio amplifier module to regulate the power supply output voltage. This combination of digital volume control in the D2Audio DSP, and analog volume control by varying the power supply voltage, offers a much wider audio dynamic range and also increases the apparent system efficiency by minimizing the power dissipation at lower amplifier output volume levels.
