The program helps prosecutors ``wage a more intense effort by our office to handle cases that greatly impact the community,'' said Jeffrey Bennett, chief deputy district attorney of special prosecutions. Bennett said the program enables prosecutors to work with investigators from the commission of a crime and an arrest through sentencing. District Attorney Greg GREG Great Egg Harbor National Scenic and Recreational River (US National Park Service) Totten, in a report to the supervisors, warned that the county is facing a ``frightening increase in gang-related violent crime,'' with an estimated 50 gangs and 5,000 gang members. Totten said gang crimes are the hardest to solve and take more resources because people are reluctant to work with police out of fear of retribution RETRIBUTION. 1. The District Attorney's Office has 14 fewer prosecutors and six fewer investigators than it did in the last fiscal year because positions have been kept open to absorb $2.1 million in budget cuts, Bennett said. The Gang Violence Suppression Program was started in 1998 and provides funding to the Ventura and Oxnard police departments in three-year cycles. Without money to meet the $280,000 cost of funding the program to last year's levels, Bennett said, the program will lose two prosecutors. The District Attorney's Office has not been formally notified about the funding cuts ``but fully expects ... the reduction,'' Totten said. |
