D-Finitive Technologies Names Chief Scientific Officer.CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Paul J. Price, Ph.D. has been named the chief scientific officer of D-Finitive Technologies, Inc., a Charleston-based biotechnology company focused on cord blood stem cell research. Dr. Price, who recently retired from GIBCO GIBCO Grand Island Biological Company (tissue culture media enterprise) Invitrogen, has been active in the areas of cell culture and media development since 1958. Dr. Price received his Ph.D. from George Washington University George Washington University, at Washington, D.C.; coeducational; chartered 1821 as Columbian College (one of the first nonsectarian colleges), opened 1822, became a university in 1873, renamed 1904. where he majored in cell biology, biochemistry and virology virology, study of viruses and their role in disease. Many viruses, such as animal RNA viruses and viruses that infect bacteria, or bacteriophages, have become useful laboratory tools in genetic studies and in work on the cellular metabolic control of gene expression . Prior to joining GIBCO Invitrogen in 1990, he was a Founder and Executive Vice President of Hycor Biomedical. This followed his tenure as a branch chief at the Center for Infectious Diseases, a division of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), agency of the U.S. Public Health Service since 1973, with headquarters in Atlanta; it was established in 1946 as the Communicable Disease Center. . As part of the Research and Development team at GIBCO Invitrogen, Dr. Price helped design and develop much of their specialized media for the culture of neurons, stem cells and other mammalian cells. Dr. Price has been an active member of the Society for In Vitro Biology (SIVB SIVB Society for In-Vitro Biology ) since 1959 and a member of their board since 1998. He is currently the President of the SIVB. He has been a reviewer for In Vitro magazine and other journals, as well as an outside expert for grant reviews for the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Price has served as an adjunct professor at several universities. He sits on several scientific advisory boards and speaks regularly around the world on cell culture-related topics.
