D-Day in Deighton; Mailbag.

CONGRATULATIONS to the committee and members of the Deighton Working Men's Club Working Men's Clubs are a formally organized type of private social club (Also see C&IU). They were initially founded in the nineteenth century in industrial areas of Great Britain, particularly the North of England with the aim of providing recreation and education for working , who originally thought of the commemorative parade to celebrate the 65th Anniversary of the D-Day held last Saturday and asked for support and guidance from he Royal British Legion.

The committee members contacted all the organisations who took part in the parade, plus the fire brigade, the Army Cadets Army Cadets could refer to:
  • Members of the Army Cadet Force (UK)
  • Members of the Cadet Corps, New Zealand Cadet Forces
  • Members of the Royal Canadian Army Cadets
  • Members of the American Cadet Alliance Army Brigade
  • Members of the Australian Army Cadets
, the naval cadets, the scouts, the guides, the Boys' Brigade, local schools and churches.

A 1934 AC Regent double decker bus transported people from the club to the Deighton Community Centre to join the parade, together with a large army truck.

The Mayor of Kirklees and consort joined the short Service of Remembrance at the war memorial outside the club and the eight standards on parade were dipped during the minute's silence.

The Mayor laid a wreath and three other wreathes were laid. After the service everyone was invited into the club where entertainment had been arranged and a good sing-a-long of wartime favourites was enjoyed. Refreshments included World War Two-style corned beef hash Noun 1. corned beef hash - hash made with corned beef

 Books.

The club premises had been bedecked with flags, red and white buntings and hanging baskets of red and white flowers.

A large tent had been put up with a tombola stall, cake stall and raffle sales.

After a wet morning even the weather acknowledged the hard work of the club members and stayed dry for the parade, the service and the afternoon events.

To all members of the Deighton Club, thank you for such a well organised afternoon.
