D/A Converter From Cirrus Logic Integrates Four Chips Into One 16-Pin Package; New Low Power Chip Increases Sound Quality and Battery Life For Portable Devices.Business Editors & High-Tech Writers NOTE: A GRAPHIC relating to this story will be available to journalists to download today at www.newstream.com AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 24, 2000 Cirrus Logic Inc. (Nasdaq:CRUS crus (krus) pl. cru´ra [L.] 1. leg (1). 2. a leglike part. crus ce´rebri ), the world's market leader in audio chips, today announced the industry's lowest power Digital to Analog (D/A D/A See: Documents Against Acceptance ) Converter, the CS43L43 that integrates four chips into one 16-pin TSSOP TSSOP Thin Shrink Small Outline Package TSSOP Thin Scale Small Outline Package . This highly integrated chip is also the industry's smallest solution and offers the highest available audio quality for portable devices, all at one-fourth the power consumption of typical low voltage D/A converters. The CS43L43 integrates the functions of four chips into one 16-pin package that consumes only 16mW of power. It outperforms other low power chips on the market by providing higher Dynamic Range (96dB), better Total Harmonic Distortion The total harmonic distortion, or THD, of a signal is a measurement of the harmonic distortion present and is defined as the ratio of the sum of the powers of all harmonic components to the power of the fundamental. plus Noise (THD+N THD+N Total Harmonic Distortion + Noise ) and longer battery life for portable audio applications. The THD+N of the CS43L43 is -85dB, a full 20dB improvement over existing solutions. The D/A converter allows more than 200 hours of music playback. Cirrus Logic is the only company to provide a single chip solution with all the capabilities typically found in four separate chips: a D/A Converter, an Audio Effects Digital Signal Processor A digital signal processor (DSP) is a specialized microprocessor designed specifically for digital signal processing, generally in real-time computing. "By combining the functions of four chips into one with the lowest power consumption, Cirrus Logic enhances its position as the industry's leading producer of audio chips," said Jason Carlson, vice president and general manager for the Consumer Products Division of Cirrus Logic. "We have designed this chip to provide the longest battery life and best sound quality for portable devices in the marketplace today." According to Will Strauss, president of Forward Concepts, an independent market research firm based in Tempe, Ariz., Cirrus Logic is the leading supplier of audio chips worldwide and represents 20 percent of the Audio IC (Integrated Circuits) market. Price and Availability The CS43L43 is available today and is priced at $2.20 in OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and quantities. Cirrus Logic Cirrus Logic is a premier supplier of high-performance analog and DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive chip solutions for Internet entertainment electronics. Building on its global market share leadership in audio integrated circuits and its rich mixed-signal patent portfolio, the company targets high-volume audio, storage and communications applications. Cirrus Logic sells its products under the Crystal(R), Maverick(tm) and 3Ci(tm) brands as well as its own name. Founded in 1984 in Silicon Valley, Cirrus Logic operates from headquarters in Austin, Texas and major sites located in Fremont, Calif. and Broomfield, Colo. as well as offices in Europe, Japan and Asia.
